- Seanad: Defence (Amendment) Bill 2015: Second and Subsequent Stages (14 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: I welcome the Bill. I also welcome the Minister of State to the House and commend him on the work he has done on this matter. As has already been said, this is very simple legislation, but it is none the less important, as it puts in place a strategy. I also commend the Minister of State on the work he has done in bringing forward defence policy, and I understand a White Paper will be...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electoral Commission in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: I do not wish that the Chairman lose his seat in the next general election, but should that unfortunate event happen, nobody would be more eminently qualified to head the boundary or electoral commission. Very few in this room, despite taking pride in their knowledge of elections and statistics, could beat the Chairman in this regard. I believe I lost a bet with him on one occasion; perhaps...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electoral Commission in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: Councillor Geoghegan is a Waterford man who loves a challenge, such as the one in Thurles the other day. Will he take on the issue with the County and City Managers Association, CCMA, in terms of what I said about PPS numbers? Will he engage with the CCMA to see if a solution could be found? The ball is in the court of the local authorities. They are the critical people in the equation.
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: I wish to raise an issue on behalf of people who are deaf and blind in this country. According to the 2011 Census of Population, there are 1,749 people who are deaf and blind. They are not currently provided with services. Services are provided for deaf people and services are provided for blind people, but no services are provided for people who deaf and blind. Recognition has been given...

- Seanad: Seanad Public Consultation Committee Report on Farm Safety: Motion (15 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: I welcome the Minister to the House. It is like the house of a thousand welcomes because I would like to welcome the people in the Visitors Gallery also, particularly my good friend, John McNamara, who is literally from the next parish from me, albeit in County Kilkenny, across the border from Tipperary. I welcome all the visitors. Sometimes people ask what Senators, and the Seanad, do....
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: This legislation specifically aims to keep the cowboys out of the industry. In some cases, they are already in the industry. This legislation is to deal with that issue and will do so effectively. To give the impression that it will not do so is unfair, particularly if one reads the Bill objectively.
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: We learned that from the Senator's party.
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: That makes us good students. We learned from the best, one of whom is in the building.
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: Drumcondra is on the Senator’s mind. They are a bit flaky over there.
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: Whatever they do, they should try not to mention his name.
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: It is called the Third World, and we try to help them.
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: I take serious umbrage to commentary from some of my esteemed colleagues, which was along the lines that the Minister of State, Deputy Phelan, is in some way unfurnished with the ability to deal with this legislation. The Minister of State is a Minister in this Government. She is charged today with carrying out the function of overseeing this debate on behalf of the Government, and I take...

Denis Landy: I appreciate that.
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: My good friend, Senator Heffernan, made some extremely good points in his contribution but a word he uses frequently in our chats over cups of tea, and cups of other things, is ráiméis. There was a little bit of that in his contribution, but I agree with him, and I have said it in the House previously, that the EPA will have to be tackled and dealt with. There should be no more...
- Seanad: Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Jul 2015)
Denis Landy: I have put on the record of this House incidents that occurred in my community going back almost 30 years. I refer to what happened in Hanrahan v. Merck Sharp & Dohme, which ended up in the Supreme Court. The body charged following that case is now the EPA, and it is not doing its job under legislation that was put in place in 1992. There were 11 prosecutions in one year by the EPA...
