Seanad: Rent Certainty (No. 2) Bill 2016: Second Stage (12 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: Well done.

Seanad: Children and Youth Affairs: Statements (18 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: I appreciate the Minister coming to the Seanad and taking the time to listen to the concerns and observations we have, as well as the positivity we have for the Minister's brief and for the children of Ireland. I would like to provide a context for the Ireland children are growing up in today. In the days before the announcement of the budget, I attended a briefing by the economic think...

Seanad: Recognition of Irish Sign Language for the Deaf Community Bill 2016: Second Stage (19 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: I welcome the opportunity to speak to the Bill. I also welcome those present in the Visitors Gallery which is full and includes members of the deaf community who are in school. Our visitors from Bishopstown community school are in the part of the Visitors Gallery that is normally restricted to visiting presidents and other VIPs. The deaf community has taken a long road and spent many years...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: National Collaborative Forum for the Early Years Care and Education Sector: Early Childhood Ireland (19 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: I thank the witnesses for coming in. Ireland has the highest birth rate in Europe and has done for decades. However, conversely we have the worst possible child-care arrangements. We broadly welcome this engagement and I said so in the Seanad yesterday. It is a kick-start. Money has been allocated for the recruitment of the social care staff. Where will those staff come from? Will...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: I wish to raise the annual report launched by the One in Four organisation. One in Four provides group treatment programmes to sexual abuse victims and offenders. Its treatment programmes also cover families, including wives, husbands, partners and parents. The treatment programmes are evidence-based and they work. Most importantly, these treatment programmes protect our children. I...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: I echo the call for the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform to come to the House to outline the strategy regarding the industrial unrest. Indeed, we are facing a winter of discontent. I am also a little wary of Fine Gael and its privatisation policy for public services. We need investment, not disinvestment. I wish to bring to the attention of the House the data released by the...

Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: On behalf of Sinn Féin, I welcome this debate. It is in the interests of public health. We all know the burden on the public purse and, in particular, the public's heath. This morning, there was a discussion in the Chamber about assaults on front-line staff and first responders, for example, fire-fighters, nurses, medics and gardaí. They usually respond to fires, accidents and...

Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (26 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: I want to allow the debate to continue, as does Senator Black. I support her in withdrawing the amendments and reserve the right to resubmit amendments on Report Stage.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: I hope Senator Neale Richmond, and everybody else, honked their horns when they drove past the teachers who were out on strike this morning.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: The EU-Canada summit on the toxic Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, CETA, was cancelled today as talks in Belgium failed to reach an agreement. An agreement was due to be signed today by the EU and Canada.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: I applaud regions of Belgium on their position, given the damage CETA will and can cause to society. It was voted on in the House and won by the acquiescence of Fianna Fáil Members when they realised the way the political wind was blowing. The areas of Belgium will come under considerable pressure until they concede to big businesses that undermine democracy and destroy basic rights....

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: Fine Gael is not interested.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: The Senator has not even read it so he does not know what he is commenting on.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: No, the Senator has not. He is making it up as he goes along.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: Fine Gael is against public investment.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: It is not fair to say that when Fine Gael is against public investment.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: That is terrible news.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Oct 2016)

Maire Devine: It is disgusting that strong-arm tactics such as blackmail have been used.
