Seanad: Central Bank and Credit Institutions (Resolution) (No. 2) Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: This relates to the provision of information by the financial institution. I refer to the case of Mr. Eugene McErlean who seemed to run into trouble with the authorities for blowing the whistle on overcharging in a credit institution some years ago. Does the Minister see any role, under Schedule 1 or, for that matter, any other section, for stating explicitly any provisions on protecting...

Seanad: Central Bank and Credit Institutions (Resolution) (No. 2) Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: I thank the Minister and his officials for attending the House. This is a very important Bill and as others have commented, if it were not for the crisis that occurred in 2008, we would never have faced this. Whether the Bill is ever used or is ever necessary, it is on the Statute Book and that creates confidence among the financial institutions that we now have a mechanism to deal with...

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: I did not intend to contribute to this debate but I feel compelled to do so when I hear the arguments from the other side of the House and the language that has been used. It is terrible to hear Fianna Fáil Senators speaking about our soldiers as if they were economic units, how much they spend locally and how much they are worth to the economy. Is that all the Defence Forces are to Fianna...

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: A decisive and a bold move, according to Arthur Morgan and Pearse Doherty on the night of 30 September 2008. Sinn Féin voted for it.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: The Minister said no decision has been made about this. I am inclined to believe that although the Leader has said things look ominous. I remind Fianna Fáil, however, that if the decision is made to close the barracks, it is Fianna Fáil's fault.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: That is false.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: Yes, but not to play politics with them.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: Playing politics with the Defence Forces is scandalous. It is disgraceful.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: He closed ten barracks.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: We will know when a decision has been made.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: Senator Daly has betrayed himself with his point scoring. He has with that last comment undone anything sensible he said earlier.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: That is beneath the Senator.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: It is probably best that the Senator cannot hear me because his insulting comments towards institutions of the State are beneath him.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: They are.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: The voices of the ordinary people, as well as the other voices, of Ireland should be heard in this Chamber.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: Rightly so. I ask the Leader to intervene with the Minister for Health or the Minister for Education and Skills in regard to a case I came across recently. I will not mention names but it relates to a 15 year old boy who suffers from muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair. He will be made homeless within the next week due to a tenancy arrangement which is rather unsatisfactory.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: The Leas-Chathaoirleach is correct. I am raising the issue on the Order of Business because it points to the disconnect in thinking between different agencies in the State. When this issue is resolved - it can be resolved very easily but it needs a ministerial push - we could have a debate on the lack of joined up thinking in our agencies. South Dublin County Council and Dublin City...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: I have heard some outbursts since I became a Member of this House six months ago, but what we have heard this afternoon is rather extraordinary. If we are talking about political reform and trying to save this House, perhaps the first thing we might be able to do is abolish Senator Terry Leyden.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2011)

John Gilroy: Indeed, they have.
