Order of Business (2 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: One thing was in evidence yesterday with the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) (No. 2) Bill; it is in evidence again today with this Bill, and it will certainly be in evidence over the next week and the week following. I refer to the Government's guillotine approach in the last couple of weeks leading into the Christmas recess. The Local Government (Dublin Mayor and Regional...

Order of Business (2 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: The Government has signalled the social welfare Bill for the coming week. Clearly, it will be guillotined and rushed through. Will the finance Bill be published next week or the following week? Has the Government made a decision yet with regard to any extended sittings of the Dáil during the remaining two weeks of the signalled session? Will the Government heed the appeals of Opposition...

Order of Business (2 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: In her response to the earlier questions the Tánaiste indicated the finance Bill would be brought forward by "some weeks". How does the Tánaiste translate "some weeks"? How many weeks is that? Is there a possibility that the finance Bill may present before Christmas? Is the Dáil to sit for an extended time in the coming week and the week following before the signalled recess at...

Leaders' Questions (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It is the dying kick.

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: The Sinn Féin Deputies will not agree to this Order of Business. We contend this Government has neither a moral nor a democratic right to impose a budget on the people today.

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: No, it is not. I am challenging the Order of Business.

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Very clearly, this will be a budget based on the IMF-EU sell-out deal and on a four year plan that seeks to tie the Irish people to an economic strategy which is doomed from the outset. Clearly, the situation is that the Taoiseach's Government is on a life support machine, courtesy of Deputies Healy-Rae and Lowry. When will the Taoiseach declare the detail of any agreement made with these...

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: No, I beg the Ceann Comahirle's pardon-----

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I object to this at the outset. As I indicated in the House last week, it is clear this Government has no right to proceed with the introduction of a budget based on an IMF-EU deal which it has not yet put before the Members of this Dáil for a vote-----

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: -----as required under Article 29 of the Constitution.

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: The Government is acting unconstitutionally.

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Will you allow me to finish?

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: You are out of order on the Order of Business.

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I am not out of order, a Cheann Comhairle. What is out of order is the Government' s action-----

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: -----and we-----

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I was not aware a guillotine applies. Is a guillotine being applied to an objection to the Order of Business?

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Is that the case? Where is the guillotine?

Order of Business (7 Dec 2010)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I will conclude with this point. The Government's proposals are absolutely unacceptable. I reiterate the Government has no moral or democratic right to proceed with the imposition of a budget that will lead to more poverty, unemployment and social misery across this land. The thing to do now is for the Taoiseach to go to the Park and allow the people have their chance to pass judgment.
