Public Accounts Committee: Vote 29 - Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (3 May 2018)

Catherine Connolly: I am not holding Mr. Jennings to one or two words. I am just trying to get to the essence of this. Has the BAI acknowledged, or come back to RTÉ to report that RTÉ is not complying with its obligations?

Public Accounts Committee: Vote 29 - Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (3 May 2018)

Catherine Connolly: I am nearly finished. I have two more points. The strategic communications unit was before us this morning and gave to the committee documentation that was very interesting. The company that worked for the unit wrote to all the newspapers to suggest wording such as "working in partnership" with regard to Project Ireland 2040. The adverts went into the papers - unusual does not capture it...

Public Accounts Committee: Vote 29 - Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (3 May 2018)

Catherine Connolly: I am only trying to elicit information. Having read this, my mouth is open that advertisements would go out to the regional and national newspapers stating "... in partnership with the Government of Ireland". Did this happen with RTÉ?

Catherine Connolly: Absolutely.

Public Accounts Committee: Vote 29 - Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (3 May 2018)

Catherine Connolly: On the issue of being financially challenged, the newspapers are also financially challenged and this was a wonderful opportunity for the newspapers. It was not a wonderful opportunity, however, for democracy and the media. They found themselves in a financially challenged situation with lots of money and the promise of more. Was there any Project Ireland 2040 work?

Public Accounts Committee: Vote 29 - Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (3 May 2018)

Catherine Connolly: No. Were any programmes offered by TG4 to be broadcast on RTÉ for nothing, to make RTÉ's life easier? Could "Ros na Rún", for example, be broadcast on RTÉ? It is cost neutral with no money involved.

Other Questions: Emergency Accommodation Provision (8 May 2018)

To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the spending by Galway City Council on emergency accommodation from 2015 to 2017 and to date in 2018; the nature of the emergency accommodation; the locations of the emergency accommodation; if the accommodation is provided directly; if not, the names of the agencies providing the accommodation; and if he will make a...

Other Questions: Emergency Accommodation Provision (8 May 2018)

Catherine Connolly: If the Minister wants an example of how out of control the market is and the emergency being created, he should look at Galway city. My question is on emergency accommodation but I will preface it by pointing out that today the students in Galway are protesting because they have been subjected to an 18% increase in their lease for the coming year. As they enter the exam period, they have...

Other Questions: Emergency Accommodation Provision (8 May 2018)

Catherine Connolly: It is difficult to digest those figures, but I note the significant increase over a number of years. I mentioned the students because that is the latest symptom of an out of control market. The Minister of State has as much information as I have; the students are protesting because they are being subjected to an increase of €1,000. Can the Minister of State imagine that? ...

Other Questions: Emergency Accommodation Provision (8 May 2018)

Catherine Connolly: I appreciate that the Minister of State is taking it seriously, but we are reliant on the market. He accepts that not a single house has been constructed. As a result, we are utterly reliant on the market. When the Simon Community carried out its snapshot study, Locked Out of the Market X, in March, it indicated that there were very few properties available for rent in Galway. In fact,...
