Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Revised) (9 Feb 2023) Louise O'Reilly: That will be spent.
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Revised) (9 Feb 2023) Louise O'Reilly: Yes, that would be helpful. I thank the Minister.
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Revised) (9 Feb 2023) Louise O'Reilly: That is fantastic. The number of inspectors should be stepped up to keep pace with the number of people in work. This would seem pretty logical to me but it does not happen unfortunately. It is something that should happen. If we think back to 2006 when the figure was 90, there are lot more people in work now. I fully appreciate all that happened between 2006 and now.

- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Revised) (9 Feb 2023) Louise O'Reilly: I appreciate that. This is an issue I raised with the Minister's predecessor, so we would welcome progress on this and I understand that the Minister is not overpromising. Turning to page 56 of the overview, this refers to the retail sector and highlights its importance to the economy, which is welcome. Unfortunately, though, we know this sector has suffered several body blows during the...
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Revised) (9 Feb 2023) Louise O'Reilly: It is just to know that in order to get to having 90 inspectors, recruitment will have to be in excess of the number of retirements and then some.
- Cost-of-Living Supports: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (14 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: If anyone needed proof of how out of touch the Government is, they got it in spades this evening. I hope the Minister is proud of herself. There has been a lot of speculation recently about the Government’s intentions regarding people struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. The Government has told homeowners they are on their own if they are struggling to pay their mortgage...
- Cost-of-Living Supports: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (14 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: One of the Minister’s colleagues specialises in renaming government services that have failed. She did her magic with the Passport Office. She needs to get another campaign going to rename the emergency payment as a “wait until your emergency is a crisis” payment because people are left waiting weeks for it.
- Cost-of-Living Supports: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (14 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: I spoke to a young mother in my constituency last week. She lives in Swords and has a daughter who is autistic and needs supports. She has been forced to cancel the therapies she pays for privately for her child. She said to me - forgive my language, Leas-Cheann Comhairle – “I have been made to feel like a shit mother.” She is not a "shit mother". She is doing her...
- Cost-of-Living Supports: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (14 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: I apologise, Leas-Cheann Comhairle. It was a direct quote.
- Energy Costs and Windfall Taxes: Motion [Private Members] (15 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: I thank the Social Democrats for bringing forward this motion and giving us the chance to have this discussion. It was slightly less than edifying to see the senior Minister appear to make light of some of the pleas from the Opposition. It does not surprise me coming as it does from that particular quarter. I note that the Minister did not stay for the full debate as he has left the...
- Civil Defence Bill 2023: Second Stage (15 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: I thank the Chair for the opportunity to speak to this important legislation that, as has been outlined, we will support. There is not a Deputy or member of the public who has not witnessed the Civil Defence at work, often at times of need or crisis. What many people do not know is that the Civil Defence is a volunteer-based organisation and that these men and women put themselves on the...
- Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Third Level Education (14 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: 72. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills his plans to improve the position of PhD candidates as a means to grow the talent pool of workers in the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6944/23]
- Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Consular Services (14 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: 288. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he will provide full details of the past and present role of a person (details supplied) at the Irish Embassy to Colombia, including if any potential conflicts of interest were investigated or identified between the person’s official role at the Embassy and at a company; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6608/23]
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Medicinal Products (14 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: 873. To ask the Minister for Health the process by which pregnant women experiencing extreme nausea and vomiting can obtain the drug cariban; the reason the drug cannot be prescribed by a GP on the drugs payment scheme as the majority of women do not see a consultant until after 12 weeks; if the current prescription process for the drug is out of line with standard practice in other EU...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Business of Joint Committee (15 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: I nominate Deputy Richard Bruton.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: I thank the witnesses for the very valuable information they have provided. I will apologise in advance because I must go to the Chamber to speak so I will not be able to stay for the entire session but I can look back on it. During pre-legislative scrutiny on the general scheme officials from the Department told us they were not considering the re-establishment of the co-operative...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: That is fair enough.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: I want to ask Dr. Carroll and Dr. McCarthy about worker co-operatives as a distinct entity. I am a fan of worker co-operatives. They put the worker at the centre and sustainability is one of the core objectives. We should be doing more of it, if you ask me. The legislation does not recognise or protect worker co-operatives as a distinct legal entity. Do they believe this is a missed...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of the Cooperative Societies Bill 2022: Discussion (15 Feb 2023)
Louise O'Reilly: I have a concern they would potentially get swamped if they do not have protection. They are a very particular form of enterprise and a very particular form of working. Does Dr. McCarthy think that by not recognising any particular type there is scope to recognise them all? How does she feel the general scheme of the legislation addresses this?
