Seanad: Order of Business (7 Dec 2017)

Paul Gavan: Well said.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2017)

Paul Gavan: I raise the issue of section 39 workers again. Over the course of this week and next, thousands of these workers in our hospices, community hospitals and the intellectual disability sector are being balloted for all-out strike action. It is hard to comprehend that they have been forced into this action. Even the Taoiseach acknowledged some weeks ago in the Dáil that the link between...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Completion of the Examination of the Report and Recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly and Preparation of a Draft Report in accordance with the Terms of Reference of the Joint Committee (13 Dec 2017)

Paul Gavan: To speak in support of the motion, it is a well-worded composite based on motions proposed by a number of parties. I respectfully disagree with Deputy Chambers, in that the evidence has been clear - we cannot grade risk. That has been a consistent message from the medical experts who have presented to us. For that reason, we should support the substitute motion 3.

Paul Gavan: I just think it would be helpful, and I would ask our colleagues in Fine Gael in the spirit of unity to actually just remove that line about the seven day consideration. It is too prescriptive. We happily support the rest of it.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2017)

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2017)

Paul Gavan: I will begin by wishing seasons greetings to everyone in the Chamber. I echo the sentiments expressed in terms of thanks to the staff, in particular, for their support during the year, and wish all a good break. I will briefly raise the issue of Ryanair. As the House will be aware, a number of passengers are facing the prospect of strike action, which is totally avoidable but unfortunately...

Paul Gavan: He does but he does not recognise-----

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2017)

Paul Gavan: He does not recognise the right of workers to join and be represented by a trade union. That is a fundamental right.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2017)

Paul Gavan: With respect - Senator Conway is a man I respect - one cannot have it both ways. If we believe in the right of workers to be represented by trade unions, if we believe in the right to collective bargaining, we should not be welcoming the likes of Michael O'Leary in to give a little dance and a speech to raise a few bob for the Fine Gael Party. We often hear that all of us believe in trade...

Seanad: Report of the Joint Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Statements (17 Jan 2018)

Paul Gavan: I welcome the Minister of State to the Chamber. I pay tribute to almost all the members of the committee, who put in a tremendous amount of work. Regardless of their own opinions, they treated each other with respect, for the most part. I pay particular tribute to the Chairman, who behaved tremendously well throughout. I say that as someone who rarely gives praise to Fine Gael but it is...
