Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming Scheme: Bord Bia (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank the delegates for the presentation. Organic farmers deal with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Bord Bia and the certification bodies. Do the delegates believe Bord Bia could kill two birds with the one shot and eliminate the fact that so many people visit the farmer? As Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív mentioned, the lamb produced on the hills of counties Mayo,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming Scheme: Bord Bia (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Private subcontractors are paid to certify somebody and Bord Bia is also paid to certify. Can we not have joined-up thinking to ensure we do not pay two people in two cars if it could all be covered by one person?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming Scheme: Bord Bia (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Is it something Bord Bia could examine?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming Scheme: Bord Bia (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank Ms Bentley.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming Scheme: Bord Bia (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: There are five certification bodies in the country.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming Scheme: Bord Bia (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: They are being paid €150 by the State every time they go out to a farmer. Mr. Zieg's organisation is also being paid by the State for going out to farmers. Surely it is not too complicated to add a few more elements to the work of Bord Bia so that it can certify the farm rather than paying two bodies to do so.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming Scheme: Bord Bia (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I do not think they are too happy with it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming Scheme: Bord Bia (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I wish to return to the issue of Bord Bia inspectors. Let us say a farmer has left something out at the back of a book. In such cases, the attitude seems to be that if there is one thing missing, then the whole lot falls. A biro is put through the whole lot and the farmer is out of action for six months. Why do we not introduce a system whereby we work with farmers? This is bread and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sea-Fisheries Sustainability Impact Assessment: BirdWatch Ireland (1 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Ireland is like a tadpole in terms of what it fishes. Does BirdWatch Ireland have counterparts in the Netherlands or other countries which are trying to explain to the latter the impact of what they are doing? When the quota was distributed, we got the worst length of the piece of straw. Four ships in Donegal almost caught more in an hour than we would catch in a year with our gear. We...

Leaders' Questions (2 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Media reports this morning are saying that €300 million in additional tax revenue will be announced this evening, which is welcome. The Taoiseach and the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation have travelled around the country announcing the number of jobs that will be created over the coming years. They have gone to eight regions. One region, which includes the second biggest...

Leaders' Questions (2 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: These apply in the west but they also apply in every other part of Ireland. The Central Statistics Office has released its figures, which I have no reason to doubt and which show that there are 4,000 fewer people working in the three counties to which I referred than there was in 2013. The Taoiseach talks about farmers. We should have someone on an aeroplane to meet the agriculture...

Leaders' Questions (2 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: The facts are that electricity suppliers have gotten the break on the rates. Small businesses which pay the rates in each county are struggling but there is nothing there for them. The Taoiseach himself has said that Galway hospital is in chaos.

Leaders' Questions (2 Dec 2015)

Michael Fitzmaurice: A High Court judge has said the mental health services in Roscommon are in chaos. We know-----

Leaders' Questions (2 Dec 2015)
