- Seanad: Hazardous Waste. (20 Apr 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: I thank the Cathaoirleach for allowing me raise this matter again. I have raised it on a number of previous occasions but the context is now considerably altered. The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources urgently needs to make a decision on a report currently sitting on his desk relating to the future plans for the rehabilitation of old mine sites in the Silvermines area....
- Seanad: Hazardous Waste. (20 Apr 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: Indeed there is.
- Seanad: Hazardous Waste. (20 Apr 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: I thank the Cathaoirleach. At present, the community is awaiting the decision of the Minister on the rehabilitation plans. If Mogul does not take this on, who will? I know from my dealings with the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, and from everything that has been said to the community over the years, that a major decision must be made. If the company is not to...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: Regarding child care, it is worth pointing out that if the equal opportunities child care programme was not being driven by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, it would not be driven by any Department. While I support calls for handing child care over to a single Department, our current position regarding child care policy is totally ad hoc. I attended the Joint Committee on...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: We have had debates on child care, many of which I called for. We must continue to have these debates as the area is now opening up. We will not develop a policy until the Government gets its head around a simple fact, that one cannot have quality child care in this or any other country unless one is prepared to spend money. We are going nowhere until the Department of Finance accepts this.
- Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (21 Apr 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to this very important debate. This is not the first time we have discussed the issue of health care and I thank the Minister, Deputy Harney, for speaking to us and being very up-front in terms of what she said. I would like to address the issue of elderly care which plays a role in the crisis in accident and emergency services. It can be difficult to...
- Seanad: Child Care Services. (26 Apr 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: I thank the Minister for State for taking this Adjournment matter. I received an impassioned plea from Templemore community services for help, support and advice after capital funding under the equal opportunities child care programme was refused for the Templemore community child care service. This service, which has operated for 25 years, provides a vital service to the community despite...
- Seanad: Child Care Services. (26 Apr 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: No comment.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (4 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: I ask the Leader to examine a report published yesterday by the Economic and Social Research Institute on the rate of caesarean sections in our maternity hospitals. This is an issue of concern with its implications for the health of pregnant women and their babies. I ask the Leader to examine the possibility of inviting the Minister for Health and Children to the House to debate this...
- Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: I second the motion. I wish to pick up where Senator Ryan finished by reiterating that the new situation we face of the rapid growth in the number of foreign workers here, which is very much to be welcomed, requires a new set of responses and it is a matter of urgency that those responses are put in place. The situation faced by the Gama workers and other instances we could cite of the...
- Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: The visit of that delegation brought home to me the fact that it is not that long since many thousands of our people had to travel abroad to be migrant workers because of high unemployment here, limited career prospects and effective underemployment. With our recent personal experience, one would imagine we would be cognisant of the situation faced by a migrant worker in a foreign country,...
- Seanad: Sea Pollution (Hazardous Substances) (Compensation) Bill 2000: Second Stage. (10 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Gallagher, to debate what he described as a technical Bill but which is also important legislation. We have no reason to oppose it. It falls in line with the commitments we have made in the context of our participation in the European Union and in other bodies and agencies and responsibilities consequent on such participation. There is also the need, as...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (11 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: Will the Leader of the House once again place the issue of child care on the agenda for debate in light of the remarks by Dr. Robin Eames, the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh, at the opening of the church's General Synod in Dublin, yesterday? He stated that even the Victorians would not have tolerated the lifestyles of and pressures on parents and children in today's full working...

- Seanad: Pension Provisions: Statements. (11 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: Allow Senator à Murchú to continue without interruption.
- Seanad: Pension Provisions: Statements. (11 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: We may have adequate time as it stands, because if Senator Burke speaks for two or three minutes, that leaves over five minutes for the Minister to reply. However, if we do not have enough time, we can extend the sitting.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (17 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: Will the Leader schedule a debate on the issue of breast cancer and ask the Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney, to address the House regarding her detailed plan to ensure BreastCheck is rolled out in the west and south without further delay? When we learn that a high profile person, someone who is in her 30s and is known internationally in the music world, has breast cancer, it...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (17 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: Will we be listened to?
- Seanad: Order of Business. (18 May 2005)
Kathleen O'Meara: I also ask for a debate on health and health administration, specifically concerning the legislation passed to establish the Health Service Executive. No business plan from the Health Service Executive is yet available. Members should be informed as to when it is likely to be available and this House should have a debate on it to follow up the passing of the legislation. This issue is...
