- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: On the utterances of certain people about what we, in the Houses of the Oireachtas, should or should not say, I want to make my position clear: anything I consider worth saying relevant to any matter of common interest to me and those I represent, I will say it. If some people do not like that, hard cheese. From time to time we call on the Leader for debates on this, that or other topic. It...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: Many couples, young and not so young, are having difficulty paying their mortgages. I am sure my colleague Senator Butler will be aware of what I am talking about. Perhaps early in the next session there might be an opportunity for Senator Butler to put his innovative and helpful views to the House on this matter. In co-operation with our spokesperson on health and children, Senator...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: I support Senator Mary White in what she said about suicide, especially as it refers to widows and widowers. In my experience that group is very vulnerable. There are many examples of what might happen if appropriate action is not taken by relatives and concerned members of the community, especially neighbours. A visit to those people at this time of year or at any time of year is of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: It is one of the top performing hospitals in the country and is a flagship of service of which I am very proud as is anybody with any dealings with it, including most people in Longford, Westmeath and further afield. We have all heard talk of reform of this House, the Dáil, the public service and so on. The public service is being demonised by a number of people both inside and outside...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: What is being said by a variety of people is unfair in singling out one section of the community.
- Seanad: Report by Commission of Investigation into Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin: Statements (Resumed) (9 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit go dtà an Teach and compliment him on the discharge of his brief. He is one of the brighter young people to join the ranks of the Ministers of State. While I do not wish to be patronising, the truth is the truth. This item on the clár of Seanad Ãireann gives me absolutely no pleasure. At the outset, I wish to note that I am a committed Roman Catholic....
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: The Cathaoirleach will not budge. That is the problem.
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: Ba mhaith liom chomh maith fáilte a chur roimh an Seanadóir Niall à Brolcháin agus comhghairdeas a ghabháil leis. Tá aithne agam ar an Seanadóir le fada an lá. Go n-eirà leis. I welcome and congratulate Senator Niall à Brolcháin. I know him for quite some time and have no doubt he will make a very impressive contribution to the House. He is a dedicated young man involved in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: I support Senators Quinn, Wilson, O'Reilly and the others who spoke in favour of the value of the applied leaving certificate. I have a daughter who completed this course and know that it proved invaluable. The criteria that are being applied, as outlined by Senator Quinn, which debar those who have completed this course from entering the appropriate institutions for those who wish to enter...
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: In many respects, 2009 can be considered an annus horribilis. I referred to the devastating floods and the report on child abuse. I support colleagues who condemned the rape of that lady in Kerry. It was an outrageous act. I thought I would never see the day when someone who has committed a crime of that nature is defended by a cleric. It is so wrong.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: I commend the bishop on the stance he took, which showed badly needed leadership. We have had a tough time in the economy in 2009 in many respects. I do not like a development I referred to on 9 December, namely, that some people are demonising the public service.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: Will the Cathaoirleach get building bricks for that gentleman? The best of people are in the public service-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: -----and what is being said by leaders in the private sector and some commentators in this House is not healthy for the economy.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2009)
Camillus Glynn: Senator Buttimer can have this envelope if it keeps him quiet. Senators have requested debates on many occasions and I would have been among those. I wish to add a request for a debate on the Irish language. It has been some time since we had one. I am very unhappy at the manner in which the HSE treats the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar. It is outrageous and wrong. Yesterday I...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jan 2010)
Camillus Glynn: Like many of my colleagues, I warmly welcome Senator Mooney back to the House. I was very pleased to support him as a candidate in the European Parliament elections. He secured a fantastic vote and while he did not make it, many people knew he was around. I was pleased in a practical sense because he does not just talk the talk but also walks the walk. He was very easy to sell because as...
- Seanad: Communications Regulation (Premium Rate Services and Electronic Communications Infrastructure) Bill 2009: Second Stage (20 Jan 2010)
Camillus Glynn: I propose that we adjourn the debate and suspend the sitting until 5.35 p.m. to give the Minister, Deputy John Gormley, time to come to the House.
- Seanad: Communications Regulation (Premium Rate Services and Electronic Communications Infrastructure) Bill 2009: Second Stage (20 Jan 2010)
Camillus Glynn: I am trying to be accommodating to give Senator Norris time to collect his thoughts, of which he has many.
- Seanad: Seanad Reform: Motion (20 Jan 2010)
Camillus Glynn: I wish formally to record the fact that the Government parties are not proposing an amendment to the motion. As someone serving his third term in the House, I welcome the opportunity to contribute to this debate on Seanad reform. The renewed programme for Government contains a commitment to establish an electoral commission which will be tasked with proposing reforms to the electoral system...
- Seanad: Seanad Reform: Motion (20 Jan 2010)
Camillus Glynn: Senators get no help. This is one of the reasons we have been criticised. I would have a difficulty in drawing a salary and expenses without giving a service back to the people who pay my wages, the taxpayers. However, what help do I get to do that? In a word, none. There has been a parliamentary response to an ill-conceived report in a national newspaper last Sunday which was grossly...
- Seanad: Seanad Reform: Motion (20 Jan 2010)
Camillus Glynn: I was also nominated by the Irish Foster Care Association. During a debate on a Private Members' motion last year we gave a good airing to the great work it does. The object of the exercise was to ensure its work was known about, promulgated through our friends in the media - if we have any left - and to ensure the people sitting in the Visitors Gallery know that Members of at least one...
