Colm Burke: I appreciate that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: The next issue I want to raise is one I have raised previously and it is the ratio of people employed in public nursing homes and the number of beds available. My understanding is that in quite a number of public nursing homes, the number of beds was reduced but the staffing levels were not reduced. There was one nursing home in particular in the Laois-Offaly area that I raised. What...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: It would be helpful, and Mr. Gloster may not be able to give it to me this morning, if we got a comparison of the number of public beds being used throughout the country in 2019 and the number of public beds available now in public nursing homes, and the staff ratio. This is relevant when we are speaking about an embargo. Crucial services that may need additional staff are prevented from...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: I want to ask about the number of beds in public nursing homes now and whether they are respite beds or long-term beds. Can we get a breakdown of this per health area? I would also like a comparison with 2019.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: There is growth in the population age group and people are surviving longer. Despite all of the criticism of our health service, we now have 800,000 people over the age of 66. Within six years it will be 1 million people. In fairness, this is due to a large degree to the health service we have. Life expectancy has changed quite a bit and has improved. We will need a long-term plan to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: With regard to rehabilitation, I have raised the issue of the new hospital that has been built in Mallow. There are 48 beds or rooms available for hospital use and there are also another 40 rooms. On the previous occasion I raised this issue, there was no outline on what these 40 rooms will be used for. Has this issue been progressed at this stage?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: This facility is lying idle. Are we speaking about doing something with it? Obviously, it will not happen in 2023. Will we see any plan in 2024? We do have a challenge in rehabilitation care. DĂșn Laoghaire is the only facility available. St. Finbarr's in Cork provides a very good service but it is under pressure at all times.

Colm Burke: The facility the HSE has acquired in the Blarney golf links hotel has had 50 beds developed. When are we likely to see these being fully operational?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: There are now three facilities in my constituency of Cork North-Central. Mallow hospital has 40 rooms, Blarney golf links hotel has 50 rooms and St. Mary's Health Campus has another 60 rooms. When are these likely to be fully operational?

Colm Burke: There were 50 beds there and a major extension has been built with an additional 60 beds.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: What number do we now have there? Can we use the facility to full capacity?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Winter Preparedness in the Hospital System: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: It is St Mary's in Gurranabraher.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Disease Management (28 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: I thank the Minister of State for taking this matter. I know that health is not his area but I appreciate his taking this so late in the evening. All of those involved in the whole area of rare diseases, both families and those involved in developing new drugs, are concerned at worsening trends which suggest that rare disease patients in Ireland are being subjected to even longer waiting...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Disease Management (28 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: I thank the Minister of State. I fully appreciate the funding that has been made available. However, we need to remember the figure I gave at the start. I know very many new orphan drugs have been made available over the past two or three years. We need to remember that we are still talking about the average number of days from approval by the European Medicines Agency to being available...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Disease Management (28 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: Could I just ask the Minister of State about the issue I raised about a liaison person to be appointed? That would take out a lot of the uncertainty within the Department on that.

Written Answers — Department of Public Expenditure and Reform: Flood Risk Management (28 Nov 2023)

Colm Burke: 46. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform the actions his Department will take in order to help expedite current flood relief projects, in view of the fact that the average flood relief project is taking 10-12 years to reach a conclusion; if this process can be made more efficient to ensure delivery of projects in a faster timeframe; and if he will make a statement on the...
