Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Dental Services Provision (13 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: We have been inundated with representations from constituents, particularly parents of teenagers, who are being made to wait inordinate amounts of time for basic assessments for orthodontic services. Early intervention in this area can prevent a significant amount of physical pain, as well as financial pain down the line. Unfortunately, waiting lists seem to have gone beyond the two-year...

Dara Calleary: I thank the Leas-Cheann Comhairle and the Ceann Comhairle for allowing me raise this issue and I particularly thank the Minister for taking it. The Minister will be more than familiar with the Mayo renewable power project which is located in the former Asahi plant just outside Killala in County Mayo. This project will give 42 MW of combined heat and power, CHP, which will greatly aid us...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Commission for Regulation of Utilities (13 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: The independent evaluator already assessed this project in 2012 and gave it 100% certification. The project has not changed. The regulator reassessed it and then reduced 100% certification to 18%. We must be able to get answers in that regard. I accept the regulator's independence. The Minister used the word, "misunderstanding." There is a lot of misunderstanding in a reduction from...

Business Insurance: Motion [Private Members] (13 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: I commend Deputy Michael McGrath on all his work on this issue. One of the difficulties of the Minister of State's position is that he is not attached to the Department of Justice and Equality. We need a Minister of real presence in that Department to deal with insurance reform, move on with the Judicial Council Bill and make sure that the relevant Garda unit is established. In the past...

Beef Sector: Motion (27 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: I hope the Government's acceptance of this motion this evening is not a political response aimed at deflecting criticism and giving the Minister cover as he proceeds. The motion tabled by Deputy McConalogue contains 14 proposals that the Government is now signing up to but what we have not seen so far is any sense of urgency or even a belief that there is a crisis here. The Minister of...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: Everybody in the House will, I am sure, share a sense of sadness and anger at the current record levels of homelessness announced yesterday. There are 6,480 adults and 3,784 children living in emergency accommodation. As we know, these figures do not tell the full story. They have been massaged and managed to try to keep them as low as possible. Despite the massaging, management and spin,...

Dara Calleary: The Tánaiste's response is the same as that he gave in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: Last year 72 houses were built in Dublin city. Of the social houses supplied which the Tánaiste claims were built, 64% were bought in the market. They were houses other people such as first-time buyers and families wanted to purchase. The Government is muscling these buyers out of the market.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: Vulture funds are buying apartments en bloc before they are released to the market, renting them and driving up rental prices. As I said, only 72 houses were built in the capital city last year. That is the plan, Rebuilding Ireland.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: In July 2016, under the Government's watch, 6,500 people were homeless.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Mar 2019)

Dara Calleary: That figure has increased to over 10,000. Despite all of the Government's words, soft talk and concern, that is the result of Rebuilding Ireland, the plan the Government state would change things.
