- Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary) (12 Jul 2022) Réada Cronin: I thank the Minister of State for coming in. I would like to follow up on what my colleague, Deputy O'Rourke, said about the €200 electricity rebate and the €20 million being moved from that. We were contacted by the National Traveller Money Advice and Budgeting Service about this. There may be only one meter on a halting site. The families there get one €200 rebate...

- Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary) (12 Jul 2022) Réada Cronin: We should not be squandering goodwill. A certain element of goodwill remains in the context of addressing climate change. Moving money that was ring-fenced for retrofitting to something else is squandering that public trust.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: I thank our guests for coming in and for the presentation. Formal training was covered a little in response to earlier questions. A DCU study published earlier this year found that almost two thirds of student teachers indicated they were not receiving enough RSE training. While many of them stated they were prepared to teach RSE in schools, they felt they were not getting the training...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: How often are in-service training days provided? If these are the results from student teachers, who we imagine are quite young, how is the council reaching older teachers who may not have received that training?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: I am interested in what was said about the ISSU. The committee was previously given evidence that the ISSU had not been consulted on the new RSE syllabus. It has also said the existing curriculum deals more with biology than consent. The witnesses are now saying that has changed.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: Is the new syllabus going to concentrate more on consent than biology?

Réada Cronin: I thank Professor O'Hagan for her submission, which was interesting. In the Sinn Féin submission to the Citizens' Assembly we suggested that DPER-----

Réada Cronin: It is the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: Yes. We should not be using all these acronyms. We suggested that the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform would partner with other jurisdictions to see who has experience in equality budgeting and gender budgeting. Would the Scottish Government or EBAG be willing to do that or be open to working with Ireland on that? What does Professor O'Hagan see as the big difference between...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: Is it working with any other government?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: I could not agree more that the data are important but the way we use them and the direction we go from there is much more important. It cannot just be about good intentions. I thank Professor O'Hagan.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: One of the recommendations of the citizens' assembly was to make sure that there is an adequately resourced and empowered statutory body for gender equality, with that responsibility being with a Cabinet member. Was the same done in Scotland? If so, was that cabinet member high up in the pecking order?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2022)
Réada Cronin: That is right.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Supply and Security: Discussion (30 Aug 2022)
Réada Cronin: I thank the witnesses for the presentations. Is the CRU collecting data on prepay meters? When a prepaid meter is being installed, is it a smart meter? I am worried about people who are suffering energy poverty self-disconnecting. Can that be tracked using a smart meter? Can we collect that kind of information, in order that the CRU knows if people are self-disconnecting? We see people...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Supply and Security: Discussion (30 Aug 2022)
Réada Cronin: I mentioned that to the Minister of State, Deputy Noonan, the last time he stood in for the Minister. We suggested that, and he indicated he was going to look into it. That is welcome.
