Seanad Public Consultation Committee: Travellers Towards a More Equitable Ireland Post-Recognition: Discussion (9 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: I commend Senator Kelleher on arranging this meeting as rapporteur. Her appointment to this House, on the recommendation of Deputy Micheál Martin, was a very wise choice by then Taoiseach, Enda Kenny. It has proved very successful.

Seanad Public Consultation Committee: Travellers Towards a More Equitable Ireland Post-Recognition: Discussion (9 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: The calibre of Senator Kelleher is very relevant to the point today. Earlier I was coming up by train and heard many of the contributions. I commend those who have attended and spoke on the need for the fundamental issues of education and housing. This is a great exercise today. The contributions were most enlightening, and I will not respond to any or all but I will put a short question....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Finnish Presidency of the Council of the European Union: Engagement with Ambassador of Finland (10 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the ambassador and her deputy and other representatives of embassies in Dublin. I hope the six-month Presidency of Finland will be a success. Finland is very experienced in this regard. I look forward to representing the committee's Chairman and members at a COSAC meeting on 21 and 22 July in Helsinki. I hope it will be a happy event but it sounds very serious so far. Ordinary...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Finnish Presidency of the Council of the European Union: Engagement with Ambassador of Finland (10 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: Perish the thought.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Alliance-Building in the European Union: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: I welcome our guests Mr. Cormac Ó Culáin, public affairs manager, and Mr. Ken Murphy, director general, from the Law Society of Ireland, and Ms Deirdre Finlay, European programmes manager, and Mr. Ivan Cooper, director of public policy, from The Wheel. The representatives' presentations are going out live which gives the other Members in the Houses the opportunity to listen and the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Alliance-Building in the European Union: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: The Venice Commission actually advised the Council of Europe and member applicant states. I know that barristers and former judges are involved. Would the Law Society of Ireland, through the work in Europe, have any interaction with the Venice Commission?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Alliance-Building in the European Union: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: The Venice Commission is more into constitutional law, but we are represented by the former DPP. I think that the expertise of CCBE has an importance too, and could liaise with it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: Mr. Hogan has the Commissioner role and he is keeping it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: That is totally aspirational.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: I join in the tributes and sympathies to the late, great Brendan Grace, who was one of the greatest comedians Ireland has ever produced. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife, Eileen, and his four children on the loss of this marvellous man. I saw his concerts and was there in 1989 when he met Frank Sinatra in the Horse Show House in Ballsbridge. It was a most memorable occasion to...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: I am pretty good at predicting that, but I could be surprised. I do not feel that Ireland has been well served by the negotiators from the European Union. I believe that we have been served appallingly in this whole effort. The backstop will not be relevant if there is no agreement, so let us bear that in mind. There are possible alternatives but have they been pursued? Have they pursued...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Closures: An Post (17 Sep 2019)

Terry Leyden: Indeed. Four members of the joint committee served in An Post or the then Department of Posts and Telegraphs. I worked in the GPO.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Closures: An Post (17 Sep 2019)

Terry Leyden: I launched a few stamps.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Closures: An Post (17 Sep 2019)

Terry Leyden: I think some already have it. Funnily enough, the philatelic section is successful. I welcome Mr. McRedmond, Ms Byrne and Mr. Bridgeman and thank them for attending. The atmosphere today is more calm than it normally is when we are discussing post office closures. At this point we must provide security of tenure. Let us bed down the system and say, "Let us move on." All politics is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Closures: An Post (17 Sep 2019)

Terry Leyden: I would like the witnesses to elaborate on that. An Post should exploit the saving book account. The interest rate is very low as it is everywhere - it is as competitive as any bank. We should encourage schoolchildren to save - bring them in young and get them involved in An Post with saving accounts. In the past two weeks I visited the GPO. It was very busy. There is a fantastic...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Closures: An Post (17 Sep 2019)

Terry Leyden: Ms Byrne might come back to me on that issue.
