Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2013)

Luke Flanagan: I thank the witnesses for their presentation. I will be upfront. I think there should be a total ban on alcohol advertising in sport or any other area. I listened to the arguments in recent weeks and what I heard from the medical profession in particular last week hammered home for me that we cannot continue with alcohol sponsorship. The witnesses outlined the benefits but it does not add...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2013)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2013)

Luke Flanagan: What I have suggested is that the Federation of Irish Sport be funded by the Government through a levy on the alcohol industry. Surely that would be appealing, given that the Federation of Irish Sport is trying to promote sport.

Luke Flanagan: I would have a concern if I suggested increasing taxation by €500 million, but I did not. I suggested that it be increased from €2 billion to €2050 million. Mr. O'Brien must have misheard me.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2013)

Luke Flanagan: It is fairly clear that it is not a level playing field if one is spending €35 million encouraging people to go for a particular type of drink and one is spending only €4 million on trying to discourage them, it is fairly clear who will win there, just sit on a see saw and put 40 on one side and 4 on the other, one will see what way it tips.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Sponsorship of Major Sporting Events by Drinks Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2013)

Luke Flanagan: It is highly insulting to say the reason someone would want to ban alcohol advertising is because he does not understand the arguments. It is not that complicated; it is quite easy to understand. Mr. O'Brien may believe the matter is complicated and that it is not understood but my analysis is that alcohol advertising should be banned. Mr. O'Brien would obviously say otherwise.

[19725/13]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Special Areas of Conservation Designation (25 Apr 2013)

Luke Flanagan: I thank the Minister for his reply. My question was to find out the number of SAC-designated bogs that have now been resolved to the satisfaction of stakeholders, including turf-cutters. The answer is zero. Seventeen years later, none of this has been resolved. I refer to a press release on Deputy Paul Connaughton's website last February which stated, "Mountbellew bog relocation can be...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Special Areas of Conservation Designation (25 Apr 2013)

Luke Flanagan: I am not advising anyone to break the law. What I am advising people to do is to vindicate their rights. There is no need for me to encourage the Minister's neighbours to vindicate their rights. Regardless of whether I went down to support them because their local Deputies had abandoned them, bar Deputy Tom Fleming and Deputy Michael Healy-Rae, they are going to vindicate their rights in...
