Confidence in Taoiseach: Motion (26 Sep 2007)

Conor Lenihan: He has never claimed to be perfect. He has never claimed the high moral ground which those on the other side of the House claim. He has never worn his morality on his sleeve like those Members who had truck with the Soviet regime and now want to lecture us on money and political morality. That is hypocritical. That was a party that published documents funded by the Soviet Union. It had...

Written Answers — Education Schemes: Education Schemes (26 Sep 2007)

Conor Lenihan: The Joint Committee Report of the Provision of Educational Services in a Multiethnic/Multicultural Society, which was published in April of 2004, is an important snap-shot of the educational needs of newcomers at a particular point in time. I am pleased that since its publication, a great deal of work has been done in this area, which addresses the issues highlighted in the Report. The...

School Accommodation. (2 Oct 2007)

Conor Lenihan: I thank the Deputy for raising this matter and welcome the opportunity to outline to the House the position regarding the provision of post-primary education in Kinvara, County Galway. On 16 May 2007, the Minister for Education and Science announced the provision of a new second level school for the Kinvara area. This decision was and remains predicated on the Mercy Order, as trustees of...

Leaders' Questions (7 Nov 2007)

Conor Lenihan: The Deputy is very deferential to the professions.

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 32 (13 Nov 2007)

Conor Lenihan: Will we start with Deputy Bannon?

Seanad: Joint Policing Committees (13 Nov 2007)

Conor Lenihan: I thank the Senator for raising this matter on the Adjournment. The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform is unable to be present owing to other business. I assure the Senator that the Minister is giving priority to establishing a joint policing committee in each local authority area. These committees provide a forum whereby members of a local authority and the senior Garda officers...

Conor Lenihan: Our levels of GNP.

National Honours System. (20 Nov 2007)

Conor Lenihan: Sir Michael Ring.

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (6 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: It is an honour to speak alongside my former UCD college mate, the Minister, Deputy Ryan. It is a particular privilege given that this year we have seen an historic partnership alliance formed between Fianna Fáil and the Green Party. When I was in college with him, I never expected the Minister would be on this journey with me but I am glad he is——

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (6 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: ——and that today he has deliberately chosen to point to the Minister, Deputy Cowen's, groundbreaking Indecon speech, which indicates that the future for this country is about productivity, equity and the environment. I take the opportunity presented by this debate to congratulate the Green Party on the success it has achieved in negotiating a programme for Government that steers the...

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (6 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: In framing the budget, the Minister, Deputy Cowen, had to look at what is an uncertain picture for the global economy. On the one hand, there are the fears, instability and uncertainties released by the sub-prime issue, first in the United States and then across the world banking sector, some of which remain. On the other, there are the positive developments in the global economy,...

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (6 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: I hope these measures will engender an element of confidence on the residential side. One of the key issues in restoring confidence in the house building sector is to tempt people into the market who have been postponing the decision to buy because of a perception that prices will fall lower. If we can tempt even a small element of them it will stimulate more house purchases. At the other...

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (6 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: We must make this leap into the higher value-added traded services and manufacturing. That will be a big challenge for the Government and society at large. The Minister for Finance, Deputy Cowen, is the ideal man to lead that change and lead this country into a bright future where there will be plenty of employment. Hopefully, my children and grandchildren will never have to face the...

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (6 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: I thank the Deputy.

Written Answers — Language Support Services: Language Support Services (11 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: I am pleased to inform the Deputy that significant progress has been made since 2004 on the recommendations in the Joint Committee's report. Recommendation 1 relates to additional teaching support. Earlier this year, the limit of two Language Support Teachers per school was removed and provision was made for a pupil to receive assistance for more than two years where necessary. There are now...

Crime Prevention. (13 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together. I apologise to Members for the absence of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy Brian Lenihan, whose mother-in-law died and is being buried today. For that reason, I am taking these questions in his stead.

Crime Prevention. (13 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: I thank the Deputy. I hope this will be the tenor in which the afternoon will proceed.

Crime Prevention. (13 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: The tragic events in recent weeks have once again demonstrated the dangers associated with drug misuse in a stark and public way. The problem is a complex and difficult one for which there is no quick fix or easy solution. The changing nature of drug use, specifically the emergence of cocaine and polydrug use in recent years, presents significant challenges for everyone involved in trying...

Crime Prevention. (13 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: The Government is doing everything in its power to increase the level of surveillance along the coastline, one of the largest in terms of this issue. Ireland has invested significantly in the foundation of the maritime surveillance operation in Lisbon, which will be effective. There are well known routes through which drugs are trafficked into this country, particularly from Latin and South...

Crime Prevention. (13 Dec 2007)

Conor Lenihan: I am sure the Government will respond if there is a request for further facilities to assist in the detection of drug smuggling. There has been a considerable upsurge in the number of seizures and fines. It is not the case that the figures are going in the wrong direction. They are going in the right direction relative to the amount of drugs being smuggled in.
