- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (26 Feb 2014)
Eric Byrne: That is a different story. I wish him luck and give my best wishes to his replacement. I read the press release in the The Irish Times, which is a great source of information about the foreign affairs committee and international affairs. I understand the Department will be considering developments in England and the UK as a whole, including the potential referendum on EU membership. It...

Eric Byrne: I would like to speak next.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Role and Functions: Trócaire (26 Feb 2014)
Eric Byrne: I congratulate Trócaire on its humanitarian work. I thank Mr. Meehan for his detailed submission. There is absolutely nothing he contributed with which one could disagree. He highlighted the key areas, such as climate change, governance issues - we all know how important that is in emerging democracies - and human rights. I express my deep appreciation of the Roman Catholic community...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Role and Functions: Trócaire (26 Feb 2014)
Eric Byrne: I note a figure in the document indicates funding increased by 4% year on year. Mr. Meehan indicated in response to Deputy Mitchell's question that funding had declined. I ask him to explain.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (4 Mar 2014)
Eric Byrne: The Chair mentioned that the Turkish ambassador to Ireland would come before the committee later this month. When will the Cypriot ambassador to Ireland be attending?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (4 Mar 2014)
Eric Byrne: My understanding was that we wanted to talk to the Cypriots about the Cypriot agreement. We have an ambassador from the Greek section of Cyprus. We are bringing in the main Turkish ambassador, rather than a representative of the Turkish part of Cyprus.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (4 Mar 2014)
Eric Byrne: I appreciate that, but it seems strange to me. I would like to know the arrangements with the Cypriot ambassador to Ireland. When the question of who should come first was raised, people said they did not really mind. The question of where the Cypriot ambassador to Ireland fits into our plans seems to be fairly imprecise. Quite frankly, I would have thought it better for the Cypriot...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Recent and Forthcoming Foreign Affairs Councils: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (4 Mar 2014)
Eric Byrne: I will concentrate my few comments on the situation in Ukraine. I am known at this committee to have dissented somewhat from the popular views that have been expressed here to the effect that Tymoshenko was the hero of Ukraine, that she was the greatest democrat that existed, she is one of ours and therefore let us run with her. I concur with the Tánaiste's condemnation of the role...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Recent and Forthcoming Foreign Affairs Councils: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (4 Mar 2014)
Eric Byrne: The Tánaiste mentioned the United Nations and the OSCE working together to facilitate a peaceful resolution. Does he mean part of that would include the monitoring by the OSCE of the elections that are coming up? Given that Russia is a member of the OSCE, which operates on the basis of consensus, how does the Tánaiste see the OSCE functioning without Russia? I understand that one...
