Seanad: An Bille um an Ochtú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Scaoileadh ar Phósadh) 2016: Céim an Choiste agus na Céimeanna a bheidh Fágtha - Thirty-eighth Amendment of the Constitution (Dissolution of Marriage) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (11 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: I thank the Minister and his officials for their work thus far on the Bill and I thank the House for its co-operation today and on previous days. I welcome the Bill very much. I remember the 1980s also, although I was not two years old. As with the Minister and his father, there was a split in my family. My father campaigned with Paddy Cooney on one side while my aunt campaigned on the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Northern Ireland (16 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: I so propose. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: Before I raise the issue I wish to speak on, may I say that I am sick, sore and tired of Sinn Féin Members standing up with their mantra that rural Ireland is forgotten. Sinn Féin believes that if its Members say something often enough, it actually becomes true. That is not the case. Rural Ireland is not dead and gone but is very much alive.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: What rural Ireland needs is strong representation to continue the progress that has been made thus far.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: When Deputy Varadkar was elected Taoiseach, the first thing he did was create a Ministry and appointed a Minister with responsibility for Rural and Community Development, Deputy Ring. There is nobody better to shout for rural Ireland. I think that Sinn Féin Members think if they keep saying the same thing over and over, it will actually become true. That is not the case. I wish to...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: The Senator does not have a monopoly on it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: I am irritated.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: It is hard to come after the comedian who went before Senator Black.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: I have to say to Senator Norris, that is very condescending and I do not like that tone. I would prefer as-----

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: I did not call him a clown. I feel as a politician who is equal to him that he should not have said that.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: We do not need to be playing games. I wish to raise the issue of the Defence Forces again, probably for the 105th time since this Seanad convened.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Apr 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: Senator Craughwell does not like me mentioning it because he thinks it is his issue but actually it is mine, too. I fear for the air ambulance in Custume Barracks. In 2012, Custume Barracks had a pilot scheme for the air ambulance and I fought very hard when I was a Deputy to make sure the air ambulance would remain there permanently, which it did. I subsequently fought for a hangar and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 May 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: On my travels over the weekend, I met a gentleman who has a tumour. He is attending University Hospital Galway for scheduled treatment. Every month when he goes for this treatment, there is no bed for him. He was advised to go in through the accident and emergency department. He does that and waits for up to 24 hours for a bed and has his treatment. He was at pains to tell me that the...

Seanad: Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) (Amendment) Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (22 May 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: I will not repeat everything that has been said. I commend the Minister of State on the work she has done on this issue and also my colleague, Senator Reilly, on his work in this area. I have always supported this measure. For almost a quarter of a millennium, the RCSI has been a leader in the field of medical education. Through all of that time, it has been a leader rather than a...

Gabrielle McFadden: There is precedent.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (28 May 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: On radio this morning the retired commandant Cathal Berry spoke eloquently about the Defence Forces and the plight in which its members found themselves. I have spoken about this topic every other week since I was elected to Seanad Éireann, but I could not say it as well as the retired commandant did this morning. He raised several issues, all of which I have raised previously and will...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (28 May 2019)

Gabrielle McFadden: It is just not right. Will the Leader ask the Minister of State at the Department of Defence to come to the House to discuss these issues? It has been said constantly that we are waiting for the pay commission to release its report, but that will not be enough. No matter what the report states, soldiers are still going to be the lowest-paid public servants. Therefore, we need a proper...
