- Topical Issue Debate: Schools Building Projects Administration (16 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. This plan does not satisfy the community's needs. When I attended a meeting one and a half years ago, it was clear that the community wanted a single school. The idea of two vertical schools is not that school. The community discussed an amalgamation of the two under one board, one principal and one school uniform. Maynooth post-primary school...
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 32 - Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Anthony Lawlor: I note that there has been an increase in the valuation of IDA Ireland's property. Does this take account of the proposal to increase the number of start-up properties that IDA Ireland has around the country? I understand that three such developments have been announced. Does the Minister envisage that IDA Ireland will develop its own industrial parks to improve the employment prospects of...
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 32 - Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Anthony Lawlor: On the services available to entrepreneurs and start-up companies, I learned this morning of a new scheme that is linked into the universities. Perhaps Enterprise Ireland should examine this scheme. What is Enterprise Ireland's capacity for sourcing funding under Horizon 2020? We have set a target of securing €1.25 billion under the strategy over the next seven years. Does...
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 32 - Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Anthony Lawlor: A very good meeting took place this morning involving people from NUI Maynooth and the prospects regarding the commercialisation of research. NUI Maynooth is linking with technical colleges in Athlone, Waterford and Carlow to create a hub. The aim of those involved is to source funding through Horizon 2020. The greatest difficulty they are encountering relates to the matter to which the...

Vote 32 - Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Anthony Lawlor: A number of intergovernmental research hubs are being established throughout Europe. Has Ireland sought to become involved with any of these?
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 32 - Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Anthony Lawlor: No, it relates to the area of responsibility of Mr. Robert-Jan Smits.
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 32 - Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Anthony Lawlor: The Commission is proceeding with the establishment of approximately 35 intergovernmental research hubs throughout Europe. A number have been set up, one of which can be located in northern Italy. These hubs are focusing on various topics within the field of research. I just want to discover whether Ireland has actively pursued the establishment of such a hub here. The one that was...
- Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2014
Vote 32 - Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (Revised) (21 Jan 2014) Anthony Lawlor: If we were to attract one of the hubs to which I refer, then Ireland could be the pan-European centre for marine research. The funding for it would come from the Commission rather than from the Irish taxpayer. As stated, it is proposed to put 35 such hubs in place throughout Europe. The strong hint we got at our meeting is that there is huge potential in the context of research into marine...
- ESB (Electronic Communications Networks) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: It is interesting to see that only Government Deputies are present and none of the Opposition Members. It demonstrates that this is a good news story. Whenever there is a bad news story, plenty of Opposition Members caw away on the other side of the House. Today happens to represent a very good news story. The strange point is that it would not have been if we had not sold off and...
- Written Answers — Department of Social Protection: Divorce Process (23 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: 121. To ask the Minister for Social Protection if the different types of divorce available in China are recognised in Irish law; the documentation required by the General Register's Office for each of these divorces to register to marry in the Irish State, particularly those which are reached through mediation in China; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3313/14]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Action Plan for Jobs: Discussion (28 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: I welcome the Secretary General to the committee for this full and frank discussion. It is vital that we continue on our current path when it comes to job creation. There is a fear out there that our cost base may be starting to increase, with significant implications for our competitiveness. Mr. Murphy indicated that the Department is working with six companies on issues such as reducing...

Anthony Lawlor: Is the Department involved in driving the establishment of a research hub in Ireland?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Action Plan for Jobs: Discussion (28 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: When we visited Brussels, we were informed about the establishment of intergovernmental hubs by Mr. Robert-Jan Smits, head of the directorate general of research and innovation. The idea is that a number of countries would come together to establish hubs that would focus their research areas on specifically targeted areas. Mr. Smits hinted that a marine research hub could be established in...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (28 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: I would certainly like to hear more about Horizon 2020.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (28 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: The key point made by Mr. Crespo, the director general of the enterprise and industry directorate, when he was before the committee is the fact that it is not about research per sebut that it must lead to innovation and jobs. Are we changing our focus from what was in FP7 which was about research to get onto the treadmill so that if we are good at getting the treadmill going early we will...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (28 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: With regard to the transposition of EU directives into Irish law, I wish to raise the sharps directive. I have been hammering at this for the past year and a half. Could the delegates give me an update on when we are likely to transpose it into Irish law?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (28 Jan 2014)
Anthony Lawlor: It was a comprehensive update but there is a lead-in period of a couple of years between the issuing of a directive and its transposition. We learnt in Brussels that we must get involved much earlier in the law-making process to determine the impact. I have raised but one directive. The habitats directive, which dates from 1993, I believe, is still causing problems for us.
