Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: -----as a woman. When I saw five men being wheeled out on RTÉ last Sunday night to explain the situation I said - my God! - what kind of Department would have five men dealing with cervical cancer?

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: Well, it is actual fact. I was in that Department for a period of time and-----

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: -----it was a male-dominated Department at that time. It has not changed very much.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I just want to say-----

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: -----that I did not get an opportunity to congratulate Senator Ian Marshall yesterday. I am impressed by his vision to drive future growth by building relationships and sales between the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, the EU and the rest of the world. That is one of his objectives. My grandparents, Elizabeth McCann and John McVeigh, came from Lurgan in County Armagh. Senator...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I wish the Senator well.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Enlargement: Discussion (Resumed) (9 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the ambassador who has come here from London. He is assigned to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Kosovo has a close relationship with Ireland. During the conflict Ireland was very involved, as the Chairman said with regard to Kerry. In Roscommon, which is a long way from Kosovo, there was a considerable amount of support and truckloads of supplies were sent out. It was a...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I join other Senators in absolutely condemning without question yesterday's murders in Gaza. To put things in context, there are 2 million Palestinian prisoners in an area of about 365 sq. km. It is the third most densely occupied part of the world. The Israelis must realise that if a revolution will take place and more deaths will come because this is only a start; this is not the end of...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I do not think so.

Seanad: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Second Stage (15 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Naughten, to the House. I welcome the Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018. The Bill is an important step to strengthen Ireland's protections against nuclear and radiological threats, which Fianna Fáil fully supports. Fianna Fáil has always been and remains wholly opposed to any form of nuclear development within Ireland and in other places...

Seanad: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Second Stage (15 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: Will all Stages be taken next week?

Seanad: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Second Stage (15 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: Committee Stage, Report Stage and Final Stage will be taken.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I agree with that proposal. Senator Clifford-Lee, who is our spokesperson on justice, outlined the position regarding the Bill and the fact that we are supporting it. We have great respect for Senator Boyhan, who is a great colleague, and we normally support his amendments in most cases. However, in this particular case we are not supporting his amendment because we are anxious that this...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: We are in favour of the Bill, in principle, and we will be supporting it. With respect to a former eminent senior counsel, he is here as a Senator, not as a senior counsel. His opinion and our opinions are equal in this House. I could not say that in respect of the Four Courts. He would have a superior approach there compared to us. I respect that is his opinion but the opinion of our...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I apologise; I told our guests to turn off their mobile phones but I did not take my own advice. The Minister came to Castlerea in Roscommon and I am not very offended but I was not invited to any of the Minister's events. Knowing the Minister when he is outside the House, I was frankly surprised by that. He was in my area which I have represented for-----

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I was very encouraged by the fact that the Minister spoke about the possible reopening of the Tarmonbarry Garda station, which is on the crossing of the River Shannon-----

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: It is very relevant to me and to the people of Roscommon.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: The Minister will be aware of a major robbery that took place in Strokestown. The bank was robbed and those involved went across the River Shannon without being stopped. Nobody stopped them.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: There is a Garda station in Tarmonbarry and I appeal to the Minister to reopen it. We would be equal then in this respect to the area covered by the Minister, Deputy Ross, when he opens Stepaside Garda station in Dublin, which is not a priority.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister for that.
