Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Enlargement: Discussion (25 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I welcome Mr. Popowski and Mr. Kiely from the Commission office in Dublin. We very much welcome the participation of the ambassadors who are representative of the various embassies at our meetings. The debate is very interesting. I am very much in favour of the enlargement of the European Union, in particular the accession of countries from the western Balkans. I wish to concentrate...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Enlargement: Discussion (25 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I welcome Ambassador Qirko and the counsellor from Albania, and their colleague from Montenegro. I will not delay long because I have outlined the situation in Montenegro. I was not quite aware that the deputy ambassador was in the audience. The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, said "don't turn your back on us" in April. We would be very supportive, as we have said in respect of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Enlargement: Discussion (25 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I compliment Albania on its work relating to Kosovo. I recall 1998 and 1999, when the country had many refugees. We sent support to Albania to assist with Kosovans. I visited a Kosovan refugee camp in Montenegro, which comprised mainly Roma people who were given educational assistance. Despite its size, it has done more for Roma refugees than any other country.

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Commissioner Phil Hogan (26 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I give a very warm welcome to Commissioner Phil Hogan and members of his cabinet, Mr. Tom Tynan and Mr. Dermot Ryan. It is a new Seanad and the Commissioner cannot say we have not had some reform, as at least we moved house from one end of the building to the other. There has been a major change but the Seanad remains very active. I compliment the Commissioner on a very wide-ranging speech...

Seanad: Defence Forces: Statements (1 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State and his officials to the House. His speech was very comprehensive and will be read by the representative bodies. Like three other Senators, I have been nominated to the House since 2002 by PDFORRA and RACO, which are part of the Irish Conference of Professional and Service Associations, ICPSA, the organisation that nominates seven Senators. It is a matter...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: For someone who does not want to make a political football of the issue, Senator Conway is certainly doing that this morning. He is bringing back a past situation.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I commend Senator Ardagh on the excellent contribution she made here this morning. This is a critical situation for everyone involved. Let us be clear about that. I also want to say that, when he was the Opposition spokesman for health in 2008, our colleague here, Senator Reilly, raised concerns about the outsourcing of the test to the United States of America. The strange thing about it...
