Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Review of Legislation on Prostitution: Discussion (12 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: I totally agree that legislation is needed but the core issue is broader and concerns violence against women and exploitation. There is a strong Garda Síochána element to the resolution of the problem. We need the resources to treat this issue as a major criminal problem in Irish society. Gangs running cigarettes and drugs rackets are also involved in prostitution. Society must...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Review of Legislation on Prostitution: Discussion (12 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: I would like the issue to be treated from the Garda point of view in the broader criminal sphere rather than as an issue concerning women. I refer to violence against women, which is a crime. The Garda Síochána should be involved. We need legislation and support services but it involves a serious criminal aspect and requires a Garda response.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Review of Legislation on Prostitution: Discussion (12 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: I have a related question. That figure of a thousand women for sale is exceptionally high for a small country such as Ireland. Does Ms Charlton have any idea of the percentage who are foreign nationals?

Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Foreign Conflicts (13 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he will support the Tibetan Community in Ireland and their campaign against the occupation of Tibet. [56011/12]

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Property Taxation (13 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: To ask the Minister for Finance if he will clarify issues raised in correspondence (details supplied) regarding the property tax. [56185/12]

Finance (Local Property Tax) Bill 2012: Second Stage (14 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: I reject the Short Title of the Bill, Finance (Local Property Tax) Bill 2012, because this is, in fact, a home tax. In the current economic crisis this unjust tax is unacceptable for householders. As a result, I will be voting against this legislation. In the past, when he was just a Deputy, the Taoiseach said it was morally unjust and unfair to tax a person's home. Now he has done...

Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (17 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: I thank you, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, for the opportunity to speak on the Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Bill 2012. This is an important Bill and it is also important to develop the debate on drugs, their cost and the efficient running of our health services. Because of the downturn in the economy the cost of drugs is now a huge issue, but efficiency and the cost of drugs to...

Other Questions: Children's Rights Referendum (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: As regards the Supreme Court judgment, does the Minister accept that the handling of the website issue was a complete cock-up by the Government? I agree with the Minister on the substance of the issue and voted "Yes" myself. However, I was annoyed during the last few days of that campaign because I thought the Government could have blown the whole issue. Does the Minister agree that the...

Other Questions: Departmental Budgets (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: I have three brief questions. Did I hear the Minister state earlier that her Department's budget was €443 million?

Other Questions: Departmental Budgets (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: What percentage of the €443 million is spent on wages and administration compared to front-line services? Deputy Durkan and many others have raised the issue of cyber-bullying. Another issue is the amount of serious assaults on children taking place in Irish society that is not even reported to the Garda. I welcome the Minister's comments about the Garda diversion programme, which is...

Other Questions: School Completion Programme (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: Given the €26 million, the 124 projects and the 13% cut in the past two years, has it been the Minister's experience since entering office a year and a half ago that most of the projects are successful and are we getting value for money from the school completion programme?

Order of Business (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: Some hard words there, Taoiseach.

Order of Business (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: Do not forget the Technical Group.

Order of Business (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: The Housing Bill deals with the regulatory framework for housing. Is the Taoiseach aware that last night the residents of Priory Hall stood in the cold and rain and that this is the second Christmas where they will have no homes? The families are suffering extreme hardship. I urge the Taoiseach to urge the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government and people directly...

Finance (Local Property Tax) Bill 2012: Committee Stage (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: Hear, hear.

Finance (Local Property Tax) Bill 2012: Committee Stage (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: Deputy Durkan, relax.

Care Services: Motion [Private Members] (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: I thank the Acting Chairman for the opportunity to speak on this important motion on the vital contribution carers make to the social and economic life of the nation. Some people are under the impression that the debate on carers, the disabled, senior citizens and the cut to the respite care grant is over. It is not. I will continue to fight and fight until carers get justice and equality....

Care Services: Motion [Private Members] (18 Dec 2012)

Finian McGrath: -----as well as the €10 cut to child benefit. Other promises to the people of the north side of Dublin were broken. Those Deputies had the brass neck to claim they prevented cuts to education and health. Tell that to those in receipt of services for the disabled, funding for which was cut by 3% last week, or to the 350 profoundly deaf children on the waiting list for life-changing...
