Peadar Tóibín: 5. To ask the Taoiseach the efforts that have been made through the shared island section of his Department to develop an all-Ireland management process to deal with Covid-19. [31372/20]
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Shared Island Unit (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: The countries that have been able to suppress Covid-19 have typically been islands and have operated as epidemiological units. Countries that have delivered consistent controls internally and controlled their borders, such as New Zealand and Australia, have kept their numbers low and saved lives. The cost of not doing this is hundreds of lives, massive ill health in the country, a wiped-out...
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Shared Island Unit (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: It is nebulous.
- Commission of Investigation (Mother and Baby Homes and certain related Matters) Records, and another Matter, Bill 2020 [Seanad]: Second Stage (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: Fáiltím roimh an deis labhairt ar an ábhar seo. One of the major problems with the Dáil and with Leinster House is that often political parties come to a decision as to how they will vote and proceed on these really important issues before we even have the discussion or the debate. I ask the Minister to make of this an opportunity for the Dáil debate and the...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Health Screening Programmes (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: I am disappointed the Minister, Deputy Stephen Donnelly, is not here to answer these questions. I know he is busy but it is important that the Minister is in the Chamber. Recently, Patricia Carrick, a mother of four from Oranmore in County Galway who is terminally ill, won her case in the High Court against the HSE and a laboratory. It was determined that a smear test done in 2016 was...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Health Screening Programmes (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: I concur with the Minister of State that it is really important that people ensure they respond to invitations they receive in respect of cancer screening opportunities. It still breaks my heart that BreastCheck is not yet up and running in the State. It is incredible that a backlog of 200,000 women, according to the latest estimates, are on a waiting list for cancer screening. The...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with Governor of the Central Bank (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: I welcome the witnesses. I apologise to the committee. I had Taoiseach's Questions so I missed the first presentation but I have read some of the documents that have been submitted. With regard to the mortgage break, the key issue for many people is that workers are banned from working as of tonight, yet the response of the banks to them is that the mortgage break is discretionary, not...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with Governor of the Central Bank (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: Is it possible for us to get a document outlining the rates that are being achieved by banks in Ireland from the ECB because there is a significant differential between the rates that they are receiving from the ECB and those they are charging to customers? One also needs to take into consideration that there has been a fair hike in bank charges in recent times as well. I understand that...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with Governor of the Central Bank (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: Yes.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with Governor of the Central Bank (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: As was said earlier, the ambition and focus of a long-term investor in a bank operating in a market in this State would have a different profile from international vulture funds that have other objectives in their engagement with the State. On the pressure being put on domestic firms at the moment, impaired loan provisions for businesses, especially domestic businesses, are currently...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with Governor of the Central Bank (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: I thank Mr. Makhlouf and Mr. Sibley for that. Moving in a different direction, what will be the impact of the ECB move towards negative interest rates? What will it mean for savers, institutional investors such as pensions and consumers?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with Governor of the Central Bank (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: What does Mr. Makhlouf think will be the long-term impact on institutional investors such as pension funds?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with Governor of the Central Bank (21 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: Would it be possible to get a longer view?
- Health (Preservation and Protection and other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act) 2020 - Part 3: Motion (Resumed) (22 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: There are reports today that 26 out of 28 patients at a nursing home in Galway have tested positive for Covid-19. One of these residents has died, and our hearts and prayers are with that resident's family. The nursing home said that it received no help from the HSE and that, for the past 72 hours, one nurse and one care assistant attended all those patients. That is an absolute scandal. 2...
- Health (Preservation and Protection and other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act) 2020 - Part 3: Motion (Resumed) (22 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: This was reported by a very eminent GP in the area today.
- Health (Preservation and Protection and other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act) 2020 - Part 3: Motion (Resumed) (22 Oct 2020)
Peadar Tóibín: I will take the advice of the Minister. If he says that is not true, I will take back that comment but the information that I have, which is from a reliable source, a GP in the area who was in contact with the "Today with Claire Byrne" show on RTÉ, is that two people spent 72 hours in the care of those individuals. Will the Minister tell me if that is not true?
