- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Medical Indemnity Insurance Costs: Discussion (22 Jan 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: We hear a lot about fraudulent claims. Do the witnesses have statistics on how many fraudulent claims are made? The statutory duty of candour law was introduced in the UK in November. Has this legal duty of candour changed the culture and policy on the part of insurance companies? Will it result in less aggressive policies by hospitals and insurance companies in pursuing lengthy legal cases?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Public Health and Food Safety: European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety (22 Jan 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: I thank the Commissioner for his comments. I have specific questions about alcohol, one of which relates to the EU alcohol strategy. Despite the work undertaken on the EU action plan, there has been no EU-wide alcohol strategy in place since the end of 2012. Why is this and when can we expect one to be implemented? Alcohol harm is a serious issue across Europe, particularly in Ireland...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Public Health and Food Safety: European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety (22 Jan 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: I wish to raise the issue of labelling on alcohol products. In the public health (alcohol) Bill we will include measures on the health labelling of alcohol products. We recognise that consumers can look up the ingredients and know what they will consume. This was thwarted at EU level. I wonder why that happened and what will be done to ensure that consumers know what they are drinking and...
- Written Answers — Department of Finance: Tax Collection (27 Jan 2015)

- Written Answers — Department of Health: Medical Card Eligibility (27 Jan 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: 397. To ask the Minister for Health the reason there are still cases of persons, and especially young children, being refused discretionary medical cards, despite being extremely ill and in view of the Health Service Executive stating in November 2014, that the process would be enhanced to make it more sensitive to people’s needs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3785/15]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Medical Indemnity Insurance Costs: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Jan 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: I thank the witnesses. My question is for Ms Courtney. Her husband Brendan is present. I saw a picture of their little daughter on Deputy Doherty's iPad. I wish to refer to point 11 in Ms Courtney's submission. Perhaps my question is too personal to answer. Ms Courtney was waiting until 2010, I believe, before getting some money towards the care of her daughter, who at that stage was...
- Order of Business (4 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: When is it expected to have a Bill to give a framework to the national ports policy? Today Stena announced it was pulling its ferry services from Dún Laoghaire. In the national ports policy the Government approved and adopted a plan to designate Dún Laoghaire as a marine and leisure tourism harbour. Now, however, it is in no-man's land waiting for legislation, yet Stena has...
- Topical Issue Debate: Ferry Services (4 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: Today is a say day for Dún Laoghaire. Stena Line announced that it will not be renewing its Dún Laoghaire Harbour ferry contract, which expires on 14 April next. This marks the end of over 20 years of Stena Line ferry sailings to Dún Laoghaire. It is truly the end of an era for Dún Laoghaire. Passenger sailings from the harbour span almost two centuries. Like...
- Topical Issue Debate: Ferry Services (4 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: I am pleased to hear the Minister acknowledge that the company has restructured its business, cut its costs and is seeking alternative income streams. I have referred to cruise liners. We would like to receive support in Dún Laoghaire to work with the council, the business improvement district scheme and the harbour board. I have mentioned that the cruise liners are important, but...
- European Debt: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (4 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: I ask three questions that relate to the Irish people. How will a debt conference actually help Ireland? Will it help the economic and social development of our country? As a country, do we need a debt conference right now when we are through the worst of it?
- European Debt: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (4 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: I will never forget the day I met my neighbours and heard how they had both decided to pack up with their three children and emigrate. This family were like thousands of others who suffered because of the ill-advised decisions made by the last Government. When this Government took over, we had only three months left before the money ran out. Our country was teetering on a cliff edge and we...
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Magdalen Laundries (10 Feb 2015)

Mary Mitchell O'Connor: When does the Taoiseach expect the child care (amendment) Bill to be brought before the House?
- Child Care: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (11 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: Careful, James.
- Child Care: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (11 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: I commend the 25,000 plus hard-working staff throughout the child care sector. They ensure our children are safe, cared for and, most importantly, happy. They allow parents to go to work confident in the knowledge that our little bundles of joy are receiving the best care possible. Infancy and preschool is a critical stage of a child's development. It is for these reasons that child...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Quarterly Update on Health Issues: Discussion (12 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: Could we get an update on the children's hospital on the St. James's campus and the satellite centres at Blanchardstown and Tallaght? When will construction works begin and, more importantly, when might they finish? I have heard people talk about crowding in accident and emergency departments. I heard the Minister speaking in the Seanad last month and he talked about a minor injuries...
- Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Health: Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (17 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: I realise what Deputy Kelleher is saying and I can see a box in front of me. Most boxes are more than 2 cm in depth. Is the Deputy arguing that all types of boxes would have to be changed? I wish to ask a question that is slightly off this topic. It is about cigars.
- Committee on Health and Children: Select Sub-Committee on Health: Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (17 Feb 2015)
Mary Mitchell O'Connor: There has been attempted bullying and intimidation of this committee and the Minister with the threat of court. Tobacco companies should be told to stand back and lay off us. We will do what is important for people's health. We will do the legitimate and right thing. I do not want to receive any e-mails from tobacco companies.
