Creeslough Community: Expressions of Sympathy (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I wish to express my deepest sympathies and those of us all in the Labour Party on the terrible, tragic and shocking news from Creeslough last Friday. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families and friends of all the ten people who lost their lives so tragically, as well as with their broader community in Donegal. We pay tribute to the bravery and courage of the emergency services...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I want to acknowledge, first, that the tragedy in Cresslough overshadows all other issues and matters that we are going to deal with in this House today. However, I would like to raise the plight of many thousands of people across this country, who work for independent non-State agencies in the care, community and voluntary sectors. I refer to section 39, section 10 and section 56...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I thank the Taoiseach for the response and for acknowledging there is an issue here, which there clearly is. As the Taoiseach has said, a large number of people are involved, including a large number of service users, people who are relying on the vital services provided by these care workers and community workers. The service users need to know that the services which enable them to live...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: A wide range of services is involved.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I am concerned that many vulnerable renters may be excluded from the renter's tax credit announced by the Government in budget 2023. I have been approached by constituents who rent their homes by way of licence agreements rather than as tenants under leaseholds. We sought clarity from the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, who has appeared to dispel concerns by stating...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Commissions of Investigation (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: 5. To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on the status of the IBRC Commission of Investigation. [49898/22]

Ceisteanna - Questions: Commissions of Investigation (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: During the debate on the IBRC commission report on Siteserv the Taoiseach indicated that the commission was due to submit a report before the end of October on the other 37 transactions. Could he update us on that? As my colleague, Deputy Nash, pointed out during Dáil statements in September, there is a broader issue here where investigations under the Commissions of Investigations...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: 10. To ask the Taoiseach when the Cabinet committee on the environment and climate change will next meet. [48472/22]

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I ask that the Cabinet committee on the environment and climate change take account of three matters, first the need for more transformational transport projects, such as the Labour Party's call for a €9 per month climate ticket for unlimited public transport journeys. We certainly welcome the plan to deliver 30 Pathfinder public transport projects, such as the phasing-out of cars...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: 19. To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on the work of the high-level oversight board for the zero tolerance strategy to be jointly led by the Secretary General of his Department. [48470/22]

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I had asked the Taoiseach about the high level oversight board for the zero tolerance strategy but I know he is appearing before the Joint Committee on Gender Equality, that I chair, tomorrow so we can address that further then. I am grateful to the Taoiseach for his engagement with our committee and for his engagement on the implementation of the 45 recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly...

Electricity Costs (Domestic Electricity Accounts) Emergency Measures and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2022: Second Stage (11 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: We are in the midst of an unprecedented trilemma comprising three crises. There is the housing crisis that our President has rightly described as a housing disaster and which is hitting many families and households very hard. There is a cost-of-living, energy bills and energy security crisis that is affecting millions of people across the country, exacerbated by Putin's brutal invasion of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: Members have the option of being physically present in the committee room or joining the meeting via MS Teams from their Leinster House offices but they may not participate from outside the parliamentary precincts. I ask members joining on MS Teams to mute their microphones when not making a contribution and to use the raise hand function to indicate. All those present in the committee room...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I thank Ms Lennon. It has been a pleasure to co-chair the working group in the Oireachtas with WorkEqual. I thank her for her focus on the practical implementation. I would like to welcome our colleagues from SIPTU. I will call IBEC next and then SIPTU for their opening statements before we move to the exchanges with members. We will have time limits on exchanges with colleagues. We...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I thank Dr. McGann for those very focused submissions on the recommendations. We appreciate that practical approach. Before I invite our witnesses from SIPTU, I need to give a privilege warning. Witnesses are protected by absolute privilege in respect of the evidence they are to give to the committee. However, if they are directed by the committee to cease giving evidence on a particular...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I might ask Ms Buckley to truncate her presentation a little. I should have said at the start that we had asked for opening statements to be confined to five minutes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I thank Ms Buckley for the practical focus on implementation of the recommendations on pay and workplace conditions. I am grateful to all the witnesses for their opening statements. I now ask members for their questions and we have a time limit of six minutes for each exchange to facilitate as many members as possible and to ensure we might have a second round of questions where appropriate.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Ivana Bacik: I raised this issue yesterday with the Taoiseach on foot of the reports about the IBEC paper. The Taoiseach gave an assurance that domestic violence leave would be introduced, which was very welcome to hear. However, we need to hear further clarification on the issue the Deputy raised.
