- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Interim Report of Committee (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I will not split hairs with anybody here. I would like to be in a forum where I could meet people who are homeless who could relax and talk to us about those issues. I do not know whether that would be a public forum but I would like to hear what they have to say. Deputy Wallace made an important point when he said that if we were to meet them in committee it would allow them express their...
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: County and City Management Association (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I welcome the representatives of the County and City Management Association. It is clear from what they have said that they have put a lot of thought into the area of housing. I have a few questions, one of which the witnesses can come back to. In terms of best practice elsewhere, what has happened in other jurisdictions and in local authorities in the United Kingdom? Obviously we should...
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: County and City Management Association (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I accept that.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: County and City Management Association (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: We had a scheme years ago where a local authority tenant could get a significant grant - I am referring to a specific category of person with the income to sustain the bonded property. It made the difference between the tenant being able to buy a home or not.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: County and City Management Association (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I disagree with Mr. Coman on that. I remember it well, although it was 20 or 30 years ago.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: County and City Management Association (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I accept that, but I do not like it to be shot down just like that.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: County and City Management Association (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I welcome the time the witnesses have given us. My first question is about the homeless. I do not know the name of the website referred to because I live in a different county. I am very interested in the social and family supports about which Mr. Cummins spoke, how local authorities work with families, which is a hugely positive engagement, and how they fund that. Returning to my best...
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: County and City Management Association (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I have not.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: County and City Management Association (26 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I live in County Louth and have not seen them but I would love to do so.
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Mental Health Services Funding (27 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: 43. To ask the Minister for Health if funding can be made available to a charity (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8561/16]
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Driver Test Centres (27 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: 109. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will designate Drogheda, County Louth as a driving test centre; the location of driving test centres nationally and the cost per annum of running each such centre; if such centres are owned or leased or rented by the Road Safety Authority and from whom; if so, the length of such lease or rental agreement and when they come up for...
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Irish Council for Social Housing (28 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I apologise for being late. I am impressed with what I have heard so far and I like what Dr. McManus is saying. Dr. McManus spoke about housing for older people and pointed out that as people age they need more supports. I do not know he is aware of the Great Northern Haven in County Louth which is a fantastic centre. I suggest to the Chairman that we might visit it. The centre has about...
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Irish Council for Social Housing (28 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: Unless one is involved in this sector, one probably does not know about it. How can we encourage more people or start-ups to become involved in what Ms Gallagher is talking about? What needs to be added to the mix?
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Irish Council for Social Housing (28 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: To make a difference.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Irish Council for Social Housing (28 Apr 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: And not in competition.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Construction Industry Federation (3 May 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: I welcome the Construction Industry Federation, CIF, representatives. We all - society, politicians and the CIF - have a great deal of ground to make up. It brings to mind two houses side by side in the recent election. One was bought for €750,000 while the next door neighbour in the exact same house paid half that. There has been huge speculation and indeed the good name of the...
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (3 May 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: Does the IPAV engage with the room-for-rent scheme, whereby a person living alone has a room to let? It is not done under a lease or a legal agreement in the usual sense of the word but the person can get up to €12,000 per annum tax free and the rent the tenant pays is written off against his or her tax.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (3 May 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: Is it the IPAV’s experience that many do not actually know about it? I know it is usually an individual but even couples whose families have flown the nest have significant room available that they could rent out in this manner. There could be more of this, which would be part of the solution.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (3 May 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: One of the problems is matching the applicant with the house. That is where the agents might be able to play a useful role.
- Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (3 May 2016)
Fergus O'Dowd: The space is there. If the right client is found on both sides it can work to everybody’s benefit. It could have a significant impact, particularly on single people. It could be a useful option. We do not push it enough. That refers to all of us. It is a collective issue.
