Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Matters: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Nov 2023)

Thomas Pringle: I thank the Minister for her presentation. Earlier, the Commissioner gave us some figures. Approximately 60,000 individuals have been arrested by the Garda so far in 2023. This amounts to 1.2% of the population having been arrested so far this year. This sounds remarkably high. Is it high? Perhaps the Minister or the departmental officials might be able to answer this. The Commissioner...

It will put in place recent changes announced by the Electoral Commission and give the legal blessing of the Legislature. Escalation of Violence in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (14 Nov 2023)

Thomas Pringle: I am happy to speak to the motion, and I highlight the motion tabled by the Social Democrats that is due to be taken tomorrow night as well. The benefit of debating two motions on the matter in one week is that it gives all of us in the smaller groups a chance to speak. There is no doubt the ongoing ethnic cleansing taking place in Gaza needs to be continuously addressed in this House....

Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Human Trafficking) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (14 Nov 2023)

Thomas Pringle: I will speak to amendments Nos. 10 and 12. They relate to saying that the applicant has been trafficked instead of saying that the application is credible. It removes the credibility requirement because it is in contravention of the EU anti-trafficking directive and Irish case law. I hope that the Minister would take this on board.

Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Human Trafficking) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (14 Nov 2023)

Thomas Pringle: For all of those reasons it is vitally important. The risk here for the Department and for system is that somebody who maybe is not deserving of humanitarian leave to remain or whatever can short-circuit the system to get into the process. Being compassionate towards victims of human trafficking is a greater good than actually allowing the prosecution of traffickers and defeating them....

Thomas Pringle: I move amendment No. 16: In page 24, between lines 18 and 19, to insert the following: (h) access to a relevant immigration permission.” I have another few questions regarding that, if I may.
