Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Irish Sign Language (26 Sep 2018)

Margaret Murphy O'Mahony: I thank the Minister for her comments. I welcome what has been done so far. Fianna Fáil has a particular interest in this as it was my colleague, Senator Mark Daly, who initiated the Irish Sign Language Bill 2016, which was passed by the Oireachtas last year. I commend the work he put into it. I will send the rest of my comments on to the Minister because we are caught for time.

Local Government (Restoration of Town Councils) Bill 2018: Second Stage [Private Members] (26 Sep 2018)

Margaret Murphy O'Mahony: I am glad Deputy Howlin has admitted that the abolition of 80 town councils and 700 town councillors, as a result of the Local Government Reform Act 2014 introduced by the former Minister, Phil Hogan, was a mistake. Many mistakes were made by that Government but at least Deputy Howlin has admitted to this one. Putting People First was, in fact, putting people last. I was a member of Bandon...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Business of Joint Committee
General Scheme of the Patient Safety Bill 2018: Department of Health
(26 Sep 2018)

Margaret Murphy O'Mahony: I thank the witnesses for giving of their time to come before the committee. If, as Dr Holohan said, with regard to the recent High Court ruling, that the Minister's request was overruled, does he believe the Bill is moot from the outset? Does strengthening the ability to compel open disclosure need to be considered? I note Dr. Holohan's comments on the empathy of professionals with...

Mental Health (Renewal Orders) Bill 2018: Second Stage (2 Oct 2018)

Margaret Murphy O'Mahony: Fianna Fáil will support this Bill but with several caveats. Any deprivation of liberty should be the last resort. As it stands, while detention is permitted under section 15 of the Mental Health Act, it is incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights. In what other section of society could a person be treated in such circumstances? That said, there is no point in...

Civil Liability and Courts (Amendment) Bill 2018: Second Stage (2 Oct 2018)

Margaret Murphy O'Mahony: Fianna Fáil has tabled this Bill in an effort to alleviate the crippling costs of insurance for homeowners, individuals and businesses, which is ultimately brought on as a result of false insurance claims. As the Minister is aware, the cost of living is very high and part of that is attributable to the cost of insurance. It is crippling people. Therefore, anything that can be done to...

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (3 Oct 2018)

Margaret Murphy O'Mahony: The programme for Government committed to the enhancement of the health service. A constituent contacted me this morning who had a cervical smear test 17 weeks ago. The results came back as unclear and it was recommended that the test be redone but she was told she will wait another 17 weeks. For a woman who is very worried at this stage because the results were unclear, surely something...

Margaret Murphy O'Mahony: I thank the Minister and Ms Magahy for attending. I especially welcome Ms Magahy and wish her well with what will not be an easy task.
