Mary Moran: I have heard the same from principals.
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: I add my voice to Senator Quinn's call for mandatory swimming lessons for young people. As somebody who worked in a swimming pool facility as a lifeguard and a swimming instructor for many years during my youth, I know the value and importance of people being in control in the water and knowing how to swim. I convey my sympathies to the families of the unfortunate people who lost their...

- Seanad: Employment Equality (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (2 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: I, too, welcome the Minister, Deputy Ó Ríordáin, to the Seanad this afternoon. I am proud to have seconded the Bill proposed by Senator Bacik, and I am delighted that it has reached Committee Stage. As someone who taught in a religious school for years and took part in conversations in the staff room, it is only right and proper that every member of staff in whatever job, be...
- Seanad: Teaching Council (Amendment) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (7 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: I wish to elaborate on that. I agree wholeheartedly with the Teaching Council's view that teachers are fully qualified particularly in the area of special education. I have seen people come straight out of college and into a special education class, sometimes with no experience. This happens in mainstream as well. I have called for a long time for strict modules on working on special...
- Seanad: Teaching Council (Amendment) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (7 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: Exactly. In my humble opinion, a person coming out of college with a BA should have that additional qualification and expertise in special needs education to teach people with special needs because that is a whole different ballgame.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: National Council for Curriculum and Assessment: Discussion. (8 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: I thank Ms McManus. As a person who has spent my working life until 2011 in the classroom, hers was a name I constantly saw on correspondence. Having often wondered what she looked like, I am delighted to meet her today. Her name was well-known throughout. I was in a second level school. It is good to put a face to the name. I congratulate her ahead of her second term. My subject was...

- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: I would like to raise the issue of school transport for students with a disability. I received word through a parliamentary question yesterday evening that a child with a disability who requires considerable attention was refused free school transport because he is not attending the nearest school deemed by the Department to be resourced to meet his educational needs. He is therefore not...
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: I understand the topic is more suited to a Commencement debate but as the update on the matter only came through yesterday evening, the deadline had passed. I have spoken to Bus Éireann and there does not appear to be an issue on its end about transporting the child. It is now a matter for the Department to apply common sense to the issue. I have had similar issues.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: As I said, I have raised similar issues for other people. As we are coming to the end of the school year, parents need to know at this stage of the year how their children will get to school in September, particularly children with special needs. They need to know what is available. Any child attending a normal primary or secondary school will know.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: We need to set this system in place for children. It is a question of common sense and the Department having a look at it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: The Department needs to look at it.I am calling for a system to be put in place whereby people know at the end of June, when they are going on holidays, exactly how their children are going to get to school in September.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Integrated Education in Northern Ireland: Discussion (16 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. I am only sorry I was unavoidably detained and did not hear all the presentations but I enjoyed listening to the members and Mr. Proctor, whom I believe gave a very powerful speech. He is a credit to integrated education and I wish him great success with his exam results and into the future. As a former teacher I find this subject...

Mary Moran: That is typical. I apologise.
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jul 2015)
Mary Moran: I second Senator Mullins's call to the Leader for a meaningful debate on disability issues early in the autumn. I agree with him and I fully support the restoration of the rates for disability payments and the respite care grant. From 25 July to 2 August, 6,500 athletes, 2,000 coaches, 30,000 volunteers, representing 165 countries, will gather in Los Angeles for the largest sport and...
