Marie Moloney: There are eight, and if one includes the Acting Chairman, there are nine.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Jul 2013)
Marie Moloney: County Kerry recorded the highest rate of suicide in the country between 2009 and 2011. Yesterday, the Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy Kathleen Lynch, launched the Kerry suicide response plan. It was developed by the Kerry suicide response forum, a HSE-led inter-agency partnership of over 30 statutory community and voluntary groups to address suicide and promote...
- Seanad: Food Provenance Bill 2013: Second Stage (3 Jul 2013)
Marie Moloney: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Tom Hayes. I worked with him when he was Chairman of the transport committee. We always got on well and it was a pleasure to work with him. I commend Senator Feargal Quinn for bringing the Bill to the House. It is a pity the Minister of State has said the timing is wrong and that he cannot accept the Bill. Ireland has always prided itself on...
- Seanad: Food Provenance Bill 2013: Second Stage (3 Jul 2013)
Marie Moloney: Yes, that is the case. I hope the Minister of State will not allow the Bill to stagnate on a shelf but work with Senator Feargal Quinn on enhancing his proposals. Why can we not be the leader in Europe in food provenance? It would be a feather in our cap and we could always say it came from the Seanad, whether we are here in time to come, but, please God, we will be.

Marie Moloney: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I find it bizarre that we are debating the abolition of the Seanad. Which one of us will say that we should not be here? None of us will do so because, if we believe it, the door is there and we should walk out. Every Member believes he or she is doing a good job and should be here. When I was a member of Kerry County Council, we could not...

Marie Moloney: I will support the Bill because we have to give the people the choice but once it is passed, I will campaign for a reformed Seanad because we need this House. It is unfair to ask the public "Yes" or "No" without giving them options. How can we expect to people to vote "Yes" to save the House if they do not know in what form it will be saved?

Marie Moloney: I also cannot understand why a stand-alone referendum is taking place when local elections will be held early next year. The State would save money if it were held on the same day as the local elections. I await the Minister's response on that.

Marie Moloney: The Senator will get another crack of the whip on another day.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jul 2013)
Marie Moloney: I welcome the introduction of the JobsPlus scheme which was announced yesterday by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Richard Bruton, and the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Joan Burton. This will be a great boost for employers in small and medium-sized enterprises who are financially stretched but are anxious to take on extra employees. It will also be a great...

Marie Moloney: The Senator has gone way over her time.
- Seanad: Parental Leave Bill 2013: Second Stage (10 Jul 2013)
Marie Moloney: I did not intend speaking on the Bill but sitting here and listening to the debate, I found it very interesting. I commend Senator White for bringing this Bill forward. It is amazing that in all the years in which Government and the Oireachtas has been dominated by men, it takes a woman to look for paternity leave. Well done to Senator White for that. We cannot overestimate the importance...
- Seanad: Parental Leave Bill 2013: Second Stage (10 Jul 2013)
Marie Moloney: Is it a choice if it is introduced into law? Again, we can thrash all that out and tweak it a bit. I am worried about it. A mother who may have had a caesarean section would need longer maternity leave than one who had a natural birth. Again, I would be worried about having these women go back to work too soon. Obviously, that is a health and safety issue. They are some reservations I...
