- Access to Credit: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (13 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: First, I welcome the opportunity to speak on this motion. I always welcome an opportunity to speak on a motion tabled by Fianna Fáil pertaining to the country's economic situation, as it gives me a great opportunity to remind its members and the people of who precisely put us into the position in which we find ourselves today. While some people quote literature, I love to quote banking...

Anthony Lawlor: The troika was coming in.
- Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: I, too, express my sympathy to the Power family. I first came across Paddy Power as a wee nipper in 1974 when my mother stood for election to the local council. He was a big man, not only physically but also as a presence in the county. I will always remember him as a family man. It reflects well on Kitty and Paddy that their family have turned out so well. They reared a tremendous...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Not-for-Profit Sector: Discussion (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: The crisis is usually an external rather than internal crisis.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Not-for-Profit Sector: Discussion (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: Perhaps we should by way of PR campaign by the organisations turn the focus towards the many Irish crises. In terms of the current crisis in the Philippines, a large number of communities are actively involved in raising funds to assist in that regard while at the same time homeless people here need assistance.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: I welcome the witnesses. I congratulate them on the work of the Health and Safety Authority. Fatal accidents in the workplace average at 50 per year. I ask for a breakdown of the age cohort of those involved in fatal accidents.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: Is there a general trend in the ages involved? Are the majority below 30, for example?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: Has the authority carried out a study on the cost impact of health and safety legislation on companies? I refer in particular to small firms. The cost of implementing the legislation is much higher for a smaller company than for a larger company.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: I acknowledge that is the case and the submission refers to proportionality and being fit for purpose.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: I have a few more questions. Our guests have stated that there is an increased demand for their services. Is this purely because of the implementation of the legislation? Given the fact that we are going through a bit of a recession, one would have expected less demand for those services, in that there are fewer companies. I am fascinated by the increase in demand when there is a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: I hope that the Health and Safety Authority, HSA, is not trying to generate more work for itself.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: I am from an agricultural background. Recently, I renewed my farmer's home insurance, yet it did not mention anything about health and safety. Perhaps the HSA could work with insurance companies and the agricultural sector on reducing the insurance bills of farmers who undertake HSA-approved courses. This could reduce the number of fatalities, many of which result from people not using...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: I am not trying to place more regulations on farmers, as there are already enough. Rather, I want to incentivise them. Farmers love being incentivised through money.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Health and Safety Authority: Discussion with Chairman Designate (19 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: If the HSA worked with the insurance companies to push something like that, it would improve farm safety levels.
- Youth Employment: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (20 Nov 2013)
Anthony Lawlor: I thank Sinn Féin for putting down this motion as it gives Members on the government side an opportunity to highlight the positive actions taken by the Government since it came into office. While youth unemployment is unacceptably high at 30%, it is starting to fall, a welcome development. In the North of Ireland where Sinn Féin is in power, unemployment is rising with almost...
