Select Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Estimates for Public Services 2015
Vote 20: An Garda Síochána (Supplementary)
Vote 21 - Prisons (Supplementary)
(2 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: May I ask a question before we finish on subhead A8? One of the major issues at present, which we debated last night and will do so again tonight, is homelessness. A number of prisoners who leave prison may not have any place to stay or to live. We are aware of organisations such as Care After Prison, the Churchfield Community Trust in Cork and others around the country, who support...

(2 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: I agree with the Minister on that point. Let me highlight the good work that is being done by Care after Prison projects. The Churchfield Community Trust in Waterford won an award recently and there are other projects around the country. With a small amount of finance they can do a very significant amount of work. The work they are doing is really impressive. The net Supplementary...

Topical Issue Debate: Energy Production (9 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: I thank the Office of the Ceann Comhairle for allowing me to raise this matter today and the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Deputy Alex White, for being present. I really appreciate it. This issue concerns the importance of the oil refinery in Whitegate. It is the only oil refinery in Ireland and, as the Minister knows, it is up for sale. I want to recognise...

Topical Issue Debate: Energy Production (9 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: I warmly welcome the Minister's statement that the Government recognises the strategic importance of the refinery at Whitegate and supports the continuation of refining in Whitegate, not only for the east Cork area but for the State. Oil expertise is difficult to acquire and replace. There is enormous expertise in refining in Whitegate. The refinery is ahead of itself in respect of biofuel...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Medical Cards: Health Service Executive (9 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: I have three issues to raise. I join colleagues in congratulating the primary care reimbursement service on the good work it has been doing. The first issue concerns the justice aspect. If somebody is declared bankrupt, his income drops. While he may have a very good job, a certain amount of his income is taken away by the financial institutions, thereby resulting in a net income that...

I will invite the witnesses to make a brief opening statement of about five minutes, and we will then have a question and answer...

Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Joint Sub-Committee on Human Rights relative to Justice and Equality Matters: UN Convention on the Rights of Older People: Discussion (9 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: There is a phone on somewhere. Something is buzzing.

Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Joint Sub-Committee on Human Rights relative to Justice and Equality Matters: UN Convention on the Rights of Older People: Discussion (9 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: How would a UN Convention on the rights of older persons impact on the rights and issues raised by Deputy O'Dowd? I think the witness said it will not happen today or tomorrow but these issues are crucial and the convention would be global and overarching. How will it impact on the issues raised by the Deputy?

Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Joint Sub-Committee on Human Rights relative to Justice and Equality Matters: UN Convention on the Rights of Older People: Discussion (9 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: It has to filter down.

Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Joint Sub-Committee on Human Rights relative to Justice and Equality Matters: UN Convention on the Rights of Older People: Discussion (9 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: I will let Mr. Moran reply here.

Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Joint Sub-Committee on Human Rights relative to Justice and Equality Matters: UN Convention on the Rights of Older People: Discussion (9 Dec 2015)

David Stanton: The abuses that Deputy O'Dowd has raised are illegal. Abuse, whether sexual, physical or financial, would be the subject of criminal investigations. Such abuse is very serious and probably covered already under statute. Will Mr. Moran link those issues to today's theme, which is the UN convention, rather than getting into specifics?
