Seanad: Climate Action and Low Carbon Development: Statements (7 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: It certainly focused attention on particular areas.

Seanad: Climate Action and Low Carbon Development: Statements (7 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: I disagree with the Minister's policy on the elimination of fishing for eel, which he brought in. I am sorry about that because it was not great. However, that is another day's work. I compliment the Minister. He has put forward a very good policy document. I believe he is extremely innovative in what he is doing. He has taken to this task very well. I wish him every continued success...

Seanad: Climate Action and Low Carbon Development: Statements (7 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: Senator Humphreys must have been a child in junior infants when Senator O'Reilly was a teacher.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Member States' Position on UK Withdrawal from EU: Maltese Ministry for Foreign Affairs (7 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the director general, Ms Mizzi, to Ireland. I have visited Malta and know that it is a beautiful island. Ms Mizzi mentioned in her contribution that there is a five generation strong Maltese community in Britain. I know from my experience of visiting Malta that an enormous number of British people have retired to the island. I do not know if Ms Mizzi has the numbers off hand...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: I second Senator Freeman's proposed amendment regarding the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2016 - First Stage. Will the Leader invite the Minister for Communications, Climate Change and Environment, Deputy Naughten, to the House to discuss Coillte's discontinuation of the Compass Club afternoon courses? This was highlighted today by-----

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: The Compass Club afterschool courses. The matter was highlighted on Joe Duffy's "Liveline" programme today. It was a worthwhile exercise on the part of that show. The clubs, which are organised by Coillte, allow young people of between six and 12 years of age to study nature, wildlife and forestry. An educational programme, it has been operated by experienced people after school. As and...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: Time is running out.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Leader and our party Whip for putting on the Order Paper today No. 4, the Registration of Wills Bill 2016. It is in my name and it is co-sponsored by Senators Ardagh and Clifford-Lee. I ask every Member to support the Bill. This is my third attempt to introduce it. I made an attempt in 2005, at which time the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport was a Senator, and in 2011.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: This Bill is my latest attempt.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: The plan is still the same. There are quite a number of new Members present. All parties backed the legislation initially and then there was a slight hiccup on the next occasion, for some reason. Now we have a new Seanad that is more likely to consider the matter afresh. I will be available throughout the day. I ask for support on Second Stage, when we will go into more detail. I am...

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: The Leader did not-----

Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2016: Second Stage (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." I welcome the Minister to the House. The Bill is supported by the Fianna Fáil Party. I have made many efforts to bring forward the Bill but Dáileanna have collapsed and it is difficult to get Private Members' Bills passed. We now have new politics and I am delighted with the new approach which will bring about results. I...

Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2016: Second Stage (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: You go up with €100 and come down with €200. It works both ways. It is gender balanced in case anyone says there are people who go up with a bit of land and come down with more but that is another day's work. As Jack Lemmon once said, "death ends a life, not a relationship". Certainly when there is a will, there are definitely relations. When there is a will, there is...

Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2016: Second Stage (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: Have I not the whole day?

Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2016: Second Stage (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: The Registration of Wills Bill amends the Civil Registration Act 2004 and provides a clear statutory basis for the registration of wills by extending the civil registration service. The register of wills shall be kept in the General Register Office, Government Offices, Convent Road, Roscommon, County Roscommon, further facilitating decentralisation to Roscommon. A study found that 70% of...

Terry Leyden: Surprise, surprise.

Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2016: Second Stage (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: I thank Senator O'Reilly.

Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2016: Second Stage (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: As is Senator O'Reilly.

Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2016: Second Stage (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: That is very generous of Senator O'Reilly. I thank him.

Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2016: Second Stage (14 Dec 2016)

Terry Leyden: Remember that lovely song "Michelle".
