Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I thought it was correct to ask——

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: Who is going to interpret this? We are discussing practices and procedures.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: All I want is for the Leader to indicate whether she was informed about the Department's concerns.

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: There has been a great deal of discussion recently about Aer Lingus's loss being BA's gain. Will the Leader indicate when the Government intends to appoint a permanent or new CEO to Aer Lingus? It is unfair to leave the airline rudderless, so to speak. When will the important matter of the second terminal at Dublin Airport be addressed? Will the Leader arrange a debate on these matters? When...

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: Tá mé anseo.

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: In light of the most recent grossly inaccurate opinion poll in a normally reputable and reliable county newspaper——

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: Unfortunately so. I call for an agreement on minimum polling standards and an absolute ban on such polls during election campaigns. Will the Leader arrange a debate on this matter? I agree with Senators Brian Hayes and Dardis on the issue they raised. This is at the core of what the European Union should be about, the single market in services, the single economic zone and so on. It behoves...

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: The Leader is very good.

Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: It had nothing to do with the war.

Seanad: Water and Sewerage Schemes. (23 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I too am grateful to the Cathaoirleach for including this matter on the Adjournment. It is a matter of vital interest to the people of Rathmore which is a key gateway to the kingdom of Kerry. Last week I attended a meeting of the community council. People are very agitated regarding the Firies-Scartaglen southern section B new water project. Before proceeding, I welcome the Minister of State,...

Seanad: Water and Sewerage Schemes. (23 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I accept the Minister of State's good intentions and thank him for his reply in which I see the answer to the burning question. The Department is right to blame the council in one instance but equally the council is waiting on his Department in the other instance. I was not aware of the two things.

Seanad: Water and Sewerage Schemes. (23 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I accept the Minister of State's assurances that he will cut through the red tape in both instances and solve them.

Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I too wish to express admiration for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform who has shown courage, compassion and spirit in allowing the Nigerian student return to complete his leaving certificate. There has been much talk recently of a cull in the Killarney National Park.

Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: The number of deer has increased but the authorities are unable to keep the deer in and the sheep out which is part of the problem. The deer create havoc for farmers throughout south County Kerry.

Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I do. The deer are a danger on the roads in the south of the county, particularly at night. Any cull should be of the imported sika species and not the native red herd. We should ensure that the authorities——

Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: Dinis, and that area in the heart of the national park, is important for deer and it would be better to keep them there. There should be a proper poll — sorry, survey — of native red numbers, just as there should be proper polls in another respect. I hope the Leader will use her good offices in this matter.

Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Mar 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I want a proper survey carried out of the native red deer.

Seanad: Expressions of Sympathy on the Death of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II: Motion. (12 Apr 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I too wish to be associated with these warm tributes. It is lovely to be reminded of the many significant events in the life of Pope John Paul II as recounted by Members. I was struck by the manner in which he approached people of other faiths. He had a way of dealing affectionately with those with whom he disagreed, often very fundamentally. However, no one left with any feeling of...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Apr 2005)

Paul Coghlan: Like other Members, I seek a debate on the Morris report so we can discuss the issues that need to be addressed. I welcome the thrust of the planning guidelines but I am anxious to see the details because the devil is in the detail. Does the Leader know if they are simply guidelines? When the previous Minister, Deputy Cullen, first spoke about the guidelines on one-off housing, I asked that...

Seanad: Rights of Migrant Workers: Statements. (13 Apr 2005)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister and his final comments on how strenuously he will oppose today's court action by Gama. Hopefully, the Minister will win and both injunctions will be lifted. While I accept everything the Minister stated about his and his officials' contacts with the Finansbank in the Netherlands, do we know for certain that the moneys in the names of the workers are in the correct and...
