Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: Nobody interrupted Senator Buttimer. He should have a little consideration.

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: I compliment the Minister of State. He was true to his word. He promised me that he would not include a debarring section with regard to local authority members and this is what he did. I, along with the Cathaoirleach, was a member of a health board for many years and I decry and bemoan the fact that local authority members are no longer on visiting committees.

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: I accept that but I am making a point. When members of a local authority met constituents who were residents of nursing homes, they were a friendly face and a conduit to the outside world. It is a pity that this has been lost. I compliment the Minister of State on what he did in this case.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: We only want to know if there is to be a vote.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: Rubbish.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: Recently, the Garda Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy, redrew the Garda divisions to coincide with county boundaries. That is an important development in the effective working of joint policing committees. Will the Leader and our spokesman, Senator O'Donovan, arrange a debate on those committees early in the new year? The public and elected representatives can play a role in policing.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: Is the Senator calling for more cuts?

Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) (No. 2) Bill 2008: Second Stage (17 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire go dtí an Teach. This Bill, although small, is very important. It is another element in the process of encouraging innovation in the use of motor vehicles. We are increasingly aware of the link between car usage and its effect on our environment. With this in mind, the launch of the new vehicle labelling system in June of this year was a welcome development....

Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) (No. 2) Bill 2008: Second Stage (17 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: Now. Agreed to take remaining Stages today.

Seanad: Foster Care: Motion (17 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: I second the motion. With the permission of the Chair, I will reserve my contribution until later.

Seanad: Foster Care: Motion (17 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh an Aire Stáit agus chomhghairdeas a dhéanamh leis as ucht an jab atá déanta aige. Mar a deireann an seanfhocal, áfach, "a lán déanta, níos mó le déanamh". I am delighted to have been responsible for putting this motion on the clár of the House this evening. There are a number of reasons for doing so, one of which was to bring the area of child...

Seanad: Foster Care: Motion (17 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: We all need a spur and we all need to be motivated from time to time. In that way, child care and foster caring can generate the most attention because all sides are focused on them. I am privileged to have been successful in tabling this motion on the clár. I thank the Leader and all the spokespersons, particularly Senator Feeney, our spokesperson. This is one of the most important...

Seanad: Foster Care: Motion (17 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: I thank colleagues for their contributions. The Minister of State has given us good news. One of the core issues relating to foster care is the inadequate number of social workers available to investigate whether children are at risk. That will be addressed, which is a welcome development. I ask the Minister of State to ensure the Department expedites the matter to ensure pending cases...

Seanad: Foster Care: Motion (17 Dec 2008)

Camillus Glynn: Actions speak louder than words.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jan 2009)

Camillus Glynn: I support the views of Members who have spoken about the Roscommon case. As a parent I am appalled. The people who were dealing with this case must have had eyes in the back of their head because it is clear from the reports that the system failed those children. It is interesting that it was only when the children went into foster care that the problem was revealed. Great work is being...

Seanad: Hospital Services (27 Jan 2009)

Camillus Glynn: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. Women are very important people in society. They are mothers who bear and rear our children and play a pivotal role in society. I hope my remarks are not interpreted as patronising. The provision of the colposcopy service in Mullingar and the midlands region is important. The Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar is among the best performing...

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jan 2009)

Camillus Glynn: Fine Gael is a rudderless ship.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Feb 2009)

Camillus Glynn: He always had.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (12 Feb 2009)

Camillus Glynn: I will be brief. When politicians had the responsibility of overseeing constituency boundary changes, if the result did not find favour it was called gerrymandering. Do we call this "commiemandering"? I do not think any politician in the history of the State who was responsible for the redrawing of constituencies would have done a worse job than has been done. Whatever modus operandi was...

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (18 Feb 2009)

Camillus Glynn: I have already spoken on this matter but I wish to add further that I am disappointed with the commission's report. Being primarily a Celtic race, we in Ireland identify very much with parishes and counties. When that principle is breached, certain situations obtain which are not consistent with what I would consider the keeping together of communities. In Leitrim a very bad job was done....
