- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies (Protection of Employees’ Rights in Liquidations) Bill 2021: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: My point basically is that the group is against enhancing workers' redundancy. Quelle surprise. The body is overwhelmingly made up of employers' representatives and its mandate is explicitly not anything to do with workers' rights and protecting workers' rights. In fact, legally it has to come up with advice that promotes enterprise, facilitates commerce and encourages commercial probity....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies (Protection of Employees’ Rights in Liquidations) Bill 2021: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: Okay. No problem. Turning to SOLAS, after more than a year of strike action and so on, all the workers got out of it was a €3 million training fund. That is not the fault of SOLAS. How much of that has been drawn down so far?

Paul Murphy: So the vast majority has not been drawn down. When does that come to an end?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies (Protection of Employees’ Rights in Liquidations) Bill 2021: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies (Protection of Employees’ Rights in Liquidations) Bill 2021: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: That is certainly what the reply to the parliamentary question suggests. How much does SOLAS estimate will be drawn down by the time we come to the end?

- Ceisteanna - Questions: Programme for Government (8 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: 6. To ask the Taoiseach if he will provide an update on the programme for Government. [3410/23]
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Programme for Government (8 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: As night follows day, racist violence follows anti-refugee protests. In recent weeks we have seen a dramatic escalation of violence against migrants in Dublin in particular. On Saturday, 28 January, homeless migrant men were attacked with dogs, sticks and a baseball bat at Ashtown. On Monday, 30 January, a building in Sheriff Street burned down seemingly because it was wrongly suspected of...

- Ceisteanna - Questions: National Economic and Social Council (8 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: 19. To ask the Taoiseach if he will report on the work of the National Economic and Social Council. [4428/23]
- Ceisteanna - Questions: National Economic and Social Council (8 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: Is the Taoiseach ashamed to lead a Government in one of the richest countries in the world and yet have a situation where one in ten parents are forced to go to food banks or rely on food donations to be able to feed their children? It is an incredible indictment of what is happening in this country and the policies of the Government. We know that the price of groceries has increased in the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: European Work Councils and Legislative Provisions for Dispute Procedures: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: This is a considerable issue that affects major multinational corporations, which have quite an interest in what we do here and the interests of workers. I was struck by what Dr. Altmeyer said about our being the third country with regard to the number of EWCs here. Will Dr. Altmeyer give an estimate of how many workers would be included and affected by our rules and legislation?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: European Work Councils and Legislative Provisions for Dispute Procedures: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: It would probably be in the millions.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: European Work Councils and Legislative Provisions for Dispute Procedures: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: Yes. If one is thinking of between 140 and 180 companies, with tens or hundreds of thousands of workers, a very large group of workers is affected. Mr. Sack did not mince his words about our compliance with the directive. In his opinion, there is just no way we are in compliance with this directive.

Paul Murphy: Does Dr. Altmeyer agree that Ireland is in breach of the directive?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: European Work Councils and Legislative Provisions for Dispute Procedures: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Feb 2023)
Paul Murphy: I obviously agree that the issue of extending the remit of the WRC is a route for this, but it seems that is not the only issue. This is about access to justice, which relates to the question of means, about which Dr. Altmeyer was making the point. It seems a central part of the legislation the Government will need to write is that means will have to be provided for. One has a...
