Seanad: Mental Health Services: Statements (29 Apr 2015)

Mary Moran: I thank Senator Colm Burke for allowing me to contribute. I know we are pressed for time, having started 20 minutes late. Much of what I wanted to discuss has been raised by my colleagues, so I will not deal with that. I will concentrate yet again on an area in which the Minister of State knows I have a major interest, namely, the mental health of children with a disability. I have...

Seanad: Mental Health Services: Statements (29 Apr 2015)

Mary Moran: I will. I would like us to talk about adult mental health when we talk about children's mental health. It is about local services. I do not apologise for making it local, but in my area, Drumcar respite facility for children and adults with an intellectual disability closed its doors last week to facilitate training for the next six weeks. I believe there is a HIQA inspection going on....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Medical Eligibility Criteria for Social Protection Payments: Discussion (29 Apr 2015)

Mary Moran: I thank the representatives of the Carers Association, the Disability Federation of Ireland and the Department of Social Protection for their attendance. I welcome the holding of this meeting which presents a great opportunity for members. It is great to see my colleagues all going through the same issues and I back absolutely everything that has been said. People with a disability have...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Apr 2015)

Mary Moran: I welcome the visitors from Monksland national school to the House today. I am delighted that they have come up from County Louth and I hope they enjoy their tour of the Houses. I wish to raise some matters to do with the health service pertaining to my county of Louth. In recent days we have heard news of three events. This morning, yet again, we heard alarming news of overcrowding in...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 May 2015)

Mary Moran: I wholeheartedly agree with Senator Craughwell. I too have heard stories of people in my home town who have been escorted to Mountjoy in taxis paid for by taxpayers, but on reaching the prison they are sent home, sometimes arriving home before their taxi driver. I too agree that perhaps such people who are before the courts could do community service. There is plenty of litter. We are...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 May 2015)

Mary Moran: Yes I am, as I have stated. How is the HSE funding being used for the six weeks during which no respite services are being provided? A full and broad debate is needed as a matter of urgency on the HSE-funded disability services that are provided nationwide.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 May 2015)

Mary Moran: I thank the Leader.

Seanad: Early Child Care: Statements (13 May 2015)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Reilly, back to the House and thank him for his comprehensive statement. One message that is clear from all the contributions today is that if we invest in our children, our future will be safe. As Senator Keane said, we must make sure the foundations are very strong when we are building the house. There is plenty of room for improvement in the early...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

Mary Moran: I would like to add my voice to yesterday's comments on the success of the "Yes" vote in the marriage equality referendum. It was a great day. The celebrations in my home town of Dundalk were wide and vast that day. I would also like to express my condolences to the family of Bill O'Herlihy on their loss. People referred to the atmosphere in Ireland on Saturday as being similar to that of...

Seanad: Health Services for People with Intellectual Disabilities: Statements (27 May 2015)

Mary Moran: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House. She is very welcome and is a regular visitor. I would also like to thank the Leader, Senator Cummins, because this is a debate for which I have asked for several months. I am delighted that we have the opportunity to discuss this. There are many areas that need to be addressed when we speak about services for people with intellectual...

Seanad: Springboard Programme: Motion (27 May 2015)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy English, to the House and I commend my Fine Gael colleagues on their introduction of this Private Members' motion. As has been said, it is an excellent motion. It shows that Springboard is working. It is one of the big successes of this Government. Since it was launched in 2011, as has been said, more than 21,000 people have participated in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Opportunities to Enhance Health Service Provision through North-South Co-operation: Minister for Health (28 May 2015)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Leo Varadkar, and thank him for his presentation. I wish to raise a few points. Nearly all of us present live in the Border area and have similar interests; therefore, the same issues are arising. However, one cannot overemphasise the need for services. I live in Dundalk and there has always been a good link-up between it and Newry in the provision of...

Mary Moran: They cannot recruit.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jun 2015)

Mary Moran: It is a beautiful day, which is a good signal that it is State exam time again. It is a little late in coming, but the sun has come out today. For the first time in a couple of years, I thought we would go through the examinations without having a question raised about a paper. I wish to highlight a serious matter brought to my attention in recent days about the ordinary level maths paper....

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jun 2015)

Mary Moran: It is a very serious matter. There are 125 points awarded for an A1 in a higher level maths paper and 60 for an A1 in an ordinary level maths paper. The same question appeared on both papers. I am calling for a debate with the Minister for Education and Skills in order that she can clarify the issue. I will also take it up as a Commencement matter.
