- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy: Discussion (8 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: Ms Murdock stated that 35 pedestrians were killed on the roads in 2016 and seven pedestrians have been killed so far this year. I come from Dundalk and I have got a great education travelling to Dublin on a regular basis even with respect to cyclists. What can we do to improve road safety. Those figures are very high; 35 people left their home during the day or at night hoping to return...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy: Discussion (8 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: The last thing I want to ask Ms Murdock is to do with speeding. I have already asked the Minister about it and the recently passed legislation. It is on non-residents, for example from Northern Ireland, and the amount of speeding and parking offences they commit. We are not doing enough. Coming from Dundalk and the Border area, I hear a lot of people coming from Northern Ireland say they...
- Hospital Waiting Lists: Statements (9 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: Along with thousands of other people, I watched the "RTÉ Investigates: Living on the List" programme during the week. Like my colleague, the Minister, Deputy Harris, I felt ashamed. It is simply not acceptable that so many people are going through such an ordeal. The revelations exposed in the programme with regard to waiting lists are extraordinary. It is time for those who are...
- Hospital Waiting Lists: Statements (9 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I come from a business background. If I had run my previous business in this manner, I would have had no customers and the business would ultimately have failed. As public representatives, we are fully accountable to our constituents. It is time for the HSE to be made fully accountable for its actions. We have been told by the HSE time and again that more funds are needed. Even though...

- Written Answers — Department of Social Protection: Free Travel Scheme Administration (14 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: 275. To ask the Minister for Social Protection the average percentage payment of the free travel pass to bus operators, excluding Bus Éireann, with regard to fare income; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6659/17]
- Confidence in Government: Motion (15 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: When I entered politics for the first time in 2011, I did so for one reason only, namely, I wanted to make a difference. In 2011, the Fianna Fáil-led Government left the country in a mess. Its governance and policies had bankrupted the country. We must never forget that its boom-and-bust policies left generations of families trapped in long-term, unsustainable debt. I know from...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (15 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I welcome the witnesses. The action of Bus Éireann, in sending letters to staff in January, was unnecessary and unhelpful and was not a proper way to begin negotiations. I note from the opening statements that the last thing anyone wants is strike action. The effects of such action would be far-reaching and widespread. I am particularly concerned for schoolchildren, especially those...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (15 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: A common theme in each of the delegates' opening statements is that all of them feel that Bus Éireann currently does not receive enough from the Department of Social Protection under the free travel scheme. They also suggest that there is not a level playing field between Bus Éireann and the private operators, which, they suggest, generally do not carry passengers under the free...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (15 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: To be fair with the time, I am happy enough although I still have a few more questions.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (15 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: SIPTU has stated that 23 Expressway routes lose an estimated €6 million per annum. Has an analysis been carried out to identify which routes are losing the most money and why there have been such losses? Have viable proposals been made to tackle the reason for the losses on these routes?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (15 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I urge all stakeholders in this dispute to sit down and explore all options so that the public, especially schoolkids, are not inconvenienced by strike action. The last thing anybody needs is strike action. It will not help anyone and will further damage everyone concerned in the long term. The Minister, as the major stakeholder, must get involved and act as a mediator between the two sides.

- Disability (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Second Stage (Resumed) (22 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I wish to share time with Deputy Joe Carey.
- Disability (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016: Second Stage (Resumed) (22 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I welcome the opportunity to speak on this important Bill. Like many Members from all sides of this House, I support the concept of an inclusive society and the need to remove all barriers that currently prevent people with disabilities from fully participating in society. I have no doubt this legislation will benefit not only those people affected by disability, but also society as a whole...

Peter Fitzpatrick: 103. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the details of pupil numbers of all primary schools in Drogheda as at September 2016 in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8904/17]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation in Bus Éireann: Discussion (22 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I welcome both delegations. I am disappointed that the talks at the Workplace Relations Commission are not looking good and that it looks as though a strike will happen. The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, as the major shareholder, should engage with all parties, even in a mediating role, to avert a strike that would be in nobody's interests. Ms Graham has stated that since...
