- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: The Business of Seafood Report 2024: Bord Iascaigh Mhara (17 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: Finally, on the blue whiting, Deputy Gallagher mentioned the SFPA there. It is annoying that if you come in with blue whiting and are turned away, you have to go to fishmeal. I always thought BIM stood for quality and stuff. Could BIM not intercede here and say the monitoring has to be done in the factories rather than going through this machine that is turning our fish into mush? Does...
- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Aquaculture Licences Appeals Board: Chairperson Designate (17 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: I wish Dr. McCarthy the very best in his appointment. My colleagues have addressed a lot of the questions. How many new licences would be applied for in a year?
- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Aquaculture Licences Appeals Board: Chairperson Designate (17 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: Chair, is there any way we can put pressure on the Marine Institute when it comes in here to address these concerns to try to move things along? There are six-year delays.
- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Aquaculture Licences Appeals Board: Chairperson Designate (17 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: From what I hear from people in the witnesses' industry, it is just sheer frustration. Everything is just drawn out and drawn out. I think if we could get some kind of mechanism in place to try to speed the thing up, that would take a lot of the pressure off ALAB and would speed the whole thing up.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: I congratulate Buncrana Tidy Towns on winning the best kept large town in Ireland. I also want to wish Donegal International Rally the very best this weekend. It is a major event in Donegal and I want those listening to stay safe, obey the marshals and, if gardaí are in attendance, to obey everything asked of them. I call on the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Standards of Care, Related Practices and Oversight in Nursing Homes: Discussion (18 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: I thank the witnesses for attending. I will just ask a few direct questions here. What we saw on RTÉ was really dreadful. Everybody in the country has an opinion about a nursing home. It would be the last place they would want to send anybody after what we saw on the television. How are we going to change the culture and behaviour in nursing homes? This seems to be going on a long...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: Today I raise the issue of the A5, on which more than 50 people have been killed since 2006. It was a dark day in Donegal yesterday when we heard that the A5 project was not proceeding. Transportation and connectivity are crucial for a big county such as Donegal. For people living in rural areas, it is the single biggest solution to rural isolation. Donegal has been patiently waiting on...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Bus Services (25 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: I welcome the Minister of State for coming to take this matter. I am standing here today to highlight the growing demand for TFI Local Link bus services in County Donegal, particularly in the villages of Ardara, Glenties and Portnoo and other areas like the Doorin Line in Mountcharles and Lough Eske by Lough Eske Castle. The current action plan expires at the end of 2025, and I hope a new...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Bus Services (25 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: I thank the Minister of State. It is great to hear that he will come to Donegal. The model there is working. There are just wee pockets that have been left behind. If they could be taken into consideration, we would have a scheme that would work for everybody. I know of four elderly people in Mountcharles who have no vehicle or cannot drive. A service to bring them into Donegal town...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: I rise to call for a review of the hedge cutting policy. Rural roads are closing all around the rural counties of Ireland. The farmers are brilliant, with 99% of them cutting their hedges when they need to be cut and looking after them well. However, there are people who are not doing it. There are landowners who are away and others who just do not do it and we need to do something about...
- Seanad: Dental Services: Motion (25 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: Many of the issues have been addressed by my colleagues. I thank the Fine Gael Party for pushing for this motion to be taken today. We definitely need more college places, more dentists, more dental nurses and more dental hygienists. A wee girl in Donegal applied three times to UCC to get onto a dental hygiene panel but was turned down because only ten places were available. Only ten...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Jun 2025)
Manus Boyle: Today, I want to talk about defibrillators. They are a key part of any local community. However, we have a slight flaw here. If people do not recognise where they are or if they are not well advertised, it is very hard to know where to get them. I will give a wee example. Last year, I got a phone call about a woman who had a heart attack and they were looking for a defibrillator.I went...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Jul 2025)
Manus Boyle: I concur with my party colleagues. The Minister needs to reverse this. People are hard pressed the way things are with the cost of living. This really needs to be sorted. Another issue I will take up today is about Irish Water. North Inishowen, Malin and Carndonagh were without water for three to four days last week. Shops, hairdressers, businesses and households had no water for four...
- Seanad: Sea Fisheries: Statements (2 Jul 2025)
Manus Boyle: I thank the Minister of State for coming in today and congratulate him on his appointment. It is long overdue. We have been 15 years without a junior Minister and the Government has shown that this is something that is a priority after so many years and that fishing and marine life are back on the agenda. It is great that the Minister of State has come in today, but the people looking in...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Jul 2025)
Manus Boyle: It was brought to my attention by Councillors Martin Harley, Jimmy Kavanagh and Michael Boyle that the funding for the apprenticeship programme for education and training boards, ETBs, nationally will be cut by €40 million this year. This means a large number of apprentices will not be in a position to go from phase 4 to phase 6. This is ridiculous at a time when the country has a...
- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Review of Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction Act 2006: Discussion (1 Jul 2025)
Manus Boyle: I thank the witnesses for coming. It is great to see them today. How would Mr. Burke describe the relationship between the industry and the monitoring authorities as of now?
- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Review of Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction Act 2006: Discussion (1 Jul 2025)
Manus Boyle: I thank Mr. Burke. I have a second question. His summary mentioned that the SFPA is attempting to justify itself. Can I have more details on that, please?
- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Review of Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction Act 2006: Discussion (1 Jul 2025)
Manus Boyle: I am sorry to hear that, Cormac. I hope it works out well for you now.
- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Review of Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction Act 2006: Discussion (1 Jul 2025)
Manus Boyle: I have a question for Mr. Byrne. Does he think we are working on a level playing field? Is the rule book in Holland, Germany and France the same as that in this country?
- Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Review of Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction Act 2006: Discussion (1 Jul 2025)
Manus Boyle: I thank Mr. Byrne. Seeing as Mr. Rihan worked for the State and then in Europe, he knows how this works. Is there anything we can do to attract the foreign vessels to land fish in Killybegs? This would be a big help to the factories. Speaking bluntly, are the rules and regulations the main reason boats are being put off landing catches in Killybegs, Castletownbere and all around the coast?
