Other Questions: State Airports (10 Mar 2015)

Denis Naughten: ...to Kilkenny. That is the impact of the economy of the Dublin region. However, as the Minister knows, in my part of the country - in western counties like Mayo, Roscommon, Galway, Leitrim and Sligo - we have not seen the impact. Knock Airport can be a key driver to bringing investment into the region. I want to know what plans the Government has to bring new investment into that project.

Swimming Pool Projects (9 Nov 2011)

Denis Naughten: ..., there has been an ongoing saga in respect of Ballaghaderreen swimming pool. No one wants to see a repeat of the tragic events involving pupils from St. Nathy's College who lost their lives in Sligo a number of years ago. It is important to put facilities such as swimming pools in place for local communities.

Cancer Services: Motion (20 May 2008)

Denis Naughten: ...deliver excellent services to the communities in which services have been closed down. The current plan will double the number of patients attending UCHG by closing down the services in Mayo and Sligo. UCHG cannot even cope with the demand being placed on it by patients in Roscommon and Galway, never mind those in the north west who will now be thrust upon it. In her contribution, the...

Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2020
Vote 37 - Social Protection (Further Revised)
(11 Nov 2020)

Denis Naughten: ...budget 2020 that we look at the possibility of staff being able to hotdesk in other Government offices. For argument's sake, that would mean someone who is based in the Department of Social Protection in Sligo, Carrick-on-Shannon or Longford hotdesking in Roscommon or Athlone, if that were closer to his or her home, rather than commute daily. People would still work in a public office...

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Finance Bill 2020: Committee Stage (16 Nov 2020)

Denis Naughten: ...at vacant public sector office spaces across the country. The Department of Social Protection has offices in my constituency of Roscommon along with offices in Longford, Carrick-on-Shannon, Sligo and Letterkenny. Perhaps somebody from County Leitrim who is working in the Department of Education and Skills in Athlone could hot-desk in the Department of Social Protection in...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Health Services (19 Oct 2021)

Denis Naughten: ...need to see structural reform and not just reward those who work within our private hospitals. In the programme for Government in 2016, for example, a commitment was secured to look at expanding the Sligo hospital cataract surgery model, which had slashed waiting times by providing the follow-up care in the community by ophthalmologists. Five years later, the only expansion of that...

Denis Naughten: ...anywhere else in our region. However, that is not spinning out to other towns such as Longford, Roscommon, Ballinasloe, Mullingar and Tullamore. The Minister of State gave the example of Sligo. I will give the example of Ballinasloe, where there is under-utilised water, wastewater and utilities. There is an abundance of public service land but IDA Ireland will not secure that additional...

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Committee Stage (25 Oct 2022)

Denis Naughten: ...because they would have to travel across water. That is bizarre and should not be allowed. Some broadcasters in the UK, when they are announcing the weather forecast, show the weather for Donegal, Sligo, Cavan, Monaghan and so on as well as for the rest of Ulster. It is a pretty basic request. I accept that the wording of the amendment may not be reflective of what we want, but it is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Public Service Obligation Bus Contracts: Discussion (17 Oct 2012)

Denis Naughten: ...has made the same case. There is a commercial service and a public service obligation, PSO, service. Why must there be a black and white situation? Can we not have a commercial service between, say, Sligo and Dublin, with each operator that is licensed on the route obliged to stop at one social responsibility town or community on the route? Bus Éireann might stop in Dromod and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Public Service Obligation Bus Contracts: Discussion (17 Oct 2012)

Denis Naughten: ...similar to what happened in Britain? Was that a success? There are serious question marks over its operation in Britain. Would it not make more sense on routes such as Dublin-Galway or Dublin-Sligo that each operator that provides a service would have a social responsibility built in? On the Ballina-Dublin route, one operator would have to stop in Carracastle and provide a service...
