Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(22 Feb 2023)

Pearse Doherty: I know the Minister of State said he will give us further details, but it appears from the information and given the fact that Military Road is too small for Garda headquarters, that there are three other premises across the city that are either in the process of being refurbished to accommodate the Garda headquarters or are already occupied.

Ballymanus Mine Disaster (7 Jun 2011)

Pearse Doherty: ...it. As the mine came closer to the shore it is understood that some of the people present tried to throw a rope around it. Although the mine had been spotted earlier that day and reported to the gardaí at around 6.45 p.m. it did not explode until 10 p.m. The reason I raise the matter is my belief that the families of those who lost their lives in the Ballymanus mine disaster deserve an...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Sep 2023)

Pearse Doherty: I acknowledged the work the Garda does in our communities keeping people and our communities safe, and particularly in regard to the operation in the south during the week. However, Government needs to support that. The facts are very clear. Since this Government has been in office, every single year, there has been a reduction in the number of gardaí in this State. The...

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Stations Opening Hours (12 Feb 2013)

Pearse Doherty: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality his plans for the Garda station in Rathcoole, County Dublin; if there are any plans to reduce the opening hours, staffing or funding of that Garda station in 2013 or 2014; and if there are any plans or consideration currently being given to the closure of the station in the near future. [6824/13]

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Data (1 Jun 2017)

Pearse Doherty: 46. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the events which charges were levied by An Garda Síochána in exchange for policing services as provided under the Garda Síochána Act 2005 in each of the years 2010 to 2016, and to date in 2017, by county, in tabular form; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26338/17]

Questions on Promised Legislation (28 Feb 2018)

Pearse Doherty: It is on the same issue. I am glad to support what Deputy MacSharry said about the Garda station in Donegal town, which is going from a 24-hour service to a six-hour service. This is on the back of many Garda stations having been closed in Donegal as a result of Deputy MacSharry's party closing down the recruitment of gardaí via Templemore-----

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Policing Co-operation (4 Oct 2016)

Pearse Doherty: 85. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the protocol regarding the presence of undercover officers from another jurisdiction operating here; if the Garda Commissioner has to authorise the presence of foreign undercover police; if the Garda Commissioner is obliged to inform her of the presence of undercover police officers in the State; and if she will make a statement...

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2016
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works (Revised)
(22 Jun 2016)

Pearse Doherty: Why not? The four leases expire in the middle of the year. If the OPW loses the court case, the Garda Síochána have to leave the office block and it will be difficult to find an alternative property that is suitable for the nerve centre of the Garda. I assume there will be additional costs. How does the OPW deal with the administration of all of that?

Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 11 - Public Expenditure and Reform (Revised)
Vote 12 - Superannuation and Retired Allowances (Revised)
Vote 14 - State Laboratory (Revised)
Vote 15 - Secret Service (Revised)
Vote 17 - Public Appointments Service (Revised)
Vote 18 - National Shared Services Office (Revised)
Vote 19 - Office of the Ombudsman (Revised)
Vote 39 - Office of Government Procurement (Revised)
(21 Feb 2019)

Pearse Doherty: That is a disappointing response. We understand the Garda will have different priorities. It deals with white-collar crime, gangland crime and everything else, so this may not be the issue at the top of its agenda. From the perspective of this committee, however, in dealing with community groups regarding issues such as play areas, marts and people trying to run festivals or motor...

Questions on Promised Legislation (17 May 2018)

Pearse Doherty: This morning there were reports of families sleeping in Garda stations. I understand in April and May there was a dramatic increase in the number of families unable to secure emergency accommodation. These families are then referred to Garda stations for child protection reasons. We can all agree it is a completely unacceptable situation. It is another example of the failure of the...

Leaders' Questions (20 Feb 2014)

Pearse Doherty: ...the public domain as a result of documents which have now gone to the Taoiseach - it is new information to the Taoiseach but not to the Minister, Deputy Alan Shatter - that a whistleblower within the Garda has used every opportunity to bring to the attention of the appropriate authorities misconduct, malpractice and destruction of documents within the Garda Síochána regarding...

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Investigations (12 Mar 2013)

Pearse Doherty: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality further to the publication of what is claimed to be a transcript of a conversation (details supplied), if a complaint has been made to An Garda Síochána and or if An Garda Síochána is investigating the matter to establish if an offence may have been committed under Tribunals of Enquiry Acts; and if he will make a statement on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Matters Relating to the Economy: Discussion with Governor of Central Bank (25 Sep 2013)

Pearse Doherty: ...exercised at the statement released by the Central Bank that it will not issue a report. I found it difficult to follow what the Governor was saying about why he has not referred the tapes to the Garda Síochána. The Garda Síochána has the tapes.

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Deployment (17 May 2018)

Pearse Doherty: 109. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the criteria employed for the purpose of determining if a Garda station can be assigned new Garda recruits; if the number of existing gardaí employed at a station, station grade, vehicle numbers and so on are all discernible factors which are taken into account when making such a decision; and if he will make a statement...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Authorised Push Payments Fraud: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Jun 2023)

Pearse Doherty: The Department held it. In this day and age, why are these reports not being sent to the Garda? Why is there a different approach? We do not have many big institutions here, unfortunately. Why is it that one of two main lenders states it reports all cases of fraud to the Garda while the other states it does not, yet the latter runs advertisements asking people to report these crimes? It...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services Staff Recruitment (25 Apr 2018)

Pearse Doherty: 127. To ask the Minister for Health the reason no Garda vetting application has been issued by the HSE to An Garda Síochána in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Donegal as required for a staffing vacancy with home support services; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this failure may render the person's job application invalid as a result; and if he will...

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Recruitment (11 Sep 2017)

Pearse Doherty: 611. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality further to the competition for the selection of Garda trainees the number of such recruitment campaigns that have been initiated in 2016 and and to date in 2017; the number of applications that were received in respect of each campaign; the number of applicants that were subsequently accepted to undergo Garda training in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Authorised Push Payments Fraud: Discussion (Resumed) (31 May 2023)

Pearse Doherty: I know for a fact that they are not. I accept that there is a lot of this crime and the resources of the Garda are extremely stretched in respect of it, but I am trying to figure out where it stands. How many section 19 notifications were there in, say, 2022, how many victims did they relate to and how many victims were contacted or not contacted by the Garda during that period? Is it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (3 Oct 2019)

Pearse Doherty: ...need to read section 19 of the Criminal Justice Act 2011. It is not for insurance companies to decide whether the evidence reaches the threshold for prosecution. That is a matter for the Garda and the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP. The witnesses and their companies have a clear responsibility to report any suspicions of fraud to the Garda and allow its members to do the work for...

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Reports (25 Oct 2016)

Pearse Doherty: 144. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if she has requested a new report from An Garda Síochána into undercover policing by the British Metropolitan Police; if the scope of this new report will include any matters relating to Northern Ireland; if this report will seek to determine if the Garda requested the assistance of the British Metropolitan Police; if this...
