Terry Leyden: I say no more delays.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jul 2015)

Terry Leyden: I second the proposal by Senator Darragh O'Brien that No. 70, motion No. 20 on the Order Paper be taken before No. 1 without debate. I also welcome the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States of America and Cuba, but it is most unfortunate that the Senate has vetoed the appointment of the ambassador in Washington from Cuba. It has the embassy opened but it will...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jul 2015)

Terry Leyden: Gosh, no.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jul 2015)

Terry Leyden: It is just my personal opinion. The Leader of the House may wish to stay here or he may want to come into the Dáil Chamber as a Deputy, which would be nice. I read in the newspapers that we may sit two days in the Dáil, Thursday and Friday. We are the last people to be informed of these things and somebody, such as the chairman of the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission, should...

Seanad: Children First Bill 2014: Second Stage (21 Jul 2015)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister to the House. Fianna Fáil is concerned about the shortcomings in the long-awaited and long-delayed Children First Bill. In our view, the legislation as currently drafted will not deliver the protection needed by vulnerable children. The Bill does not set out the necessary sanctions for people who fail to report child protection concerns. This amounts to a major...

Seanad: Children (Amendment) Bill 2015 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (21 Jul 2015)

Terry Leyden: I compliment the Minister on bringing the Bill forward. My party was concerned about the question of children who are on remand who are not convicted mixing with other children who are convicted, and that they would try to separate them in Oberstown. I look forward to this visit to Oberstown. Maybe it has happened already.

Seanad: Children (Amendment) Bill 2015 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (21 Jul 2015)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Leo Varadkar, to the House. I thank him for engaging in this Commencement debate on the future of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon.I wish to share my time with Senator John Kelly. The Minister is probably aware of the situation regarding the HIQA report into the future of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon. In the report of 2 March when an inspection...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Hospital Services (23 Sep 2015)

Terry Leyden: I acknowledge that the Minister has acknowledged the excellent work of the staff at the Sacred Heart Hospital which is a very popular location for patients. I am concerned, however, that he has not confirmed that there is a capital allocation of over €400 million to be spread over the next five years. Obviously, it has not been signed off on yet. I note that the Minister for Public...

I look forward to hearing his contributions next week. He is a very good contributor as well.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Sep 2015)

Terry Leyden: I join with the Leader and our leader on this side of the House on what was said about Senator Jimmy Harte. I wish him well. He was very popular here and was so proud and delighted to be a Senator. I know that from his contributions and meeting him. It is sad that he has decided to resign for health reasons. We wish him a speedy recovery. I also extend best wishes to him, his wife Mary...
