Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport: Safeguarding Policies and Procedures within the Football Association of Ireland: Discussion (24 Sep 2025)

Peter Cleere: Okay, that is important. As I said earlier, we cannot change what happened in the past. There is no future in the past, but we cannot have a situation where there is a safeguarding or child welfare concern in the FAI. The witnesses are the custodians of it and despite what many people out there might say, the grassroots of the organisation are absolutely amazing. The witnesses represent...

Peter Cleere: On the FAI upgrading its processes and procedures, we do not have a figure for the costs relating to the head of safeguarding and the team of four in place. How much did the FAI spend in upgrading processes and procedures for child safeguarding and safeguarding in general?

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (30 Sep 2025)

Peter Cleere: We all know there is a huge amount of work to be done on flood protection and flood mitigation. I acknowledge the €1.3 billion that has been set aside under the flood risk investment programme. Flooding in Ireland can have a significant impact on homes, businesses, people and communities. While I accept the problem of flooding cannot be eliminated, it can be managed or mitigated to...

Investment in Sport and Sporting Infrastructure: Statements (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: I am delighted to have the opportunity to speak on this vital issue of sports capital grants and their significance to communities right across the country, in particular in my own constituency of Carlow-Kilkenny. I will focus specifically on the sports capital grants, which play an essential role in promoting healthy lifestyles and community spirit. The investment of €250 million...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency: Mr. Maroš Šefovi (2 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: The Commissioner is very welcome to Ireland. I am from the small village of Graiguenamanagh in County Kilkenny on the Kilkenny-Carlow border in the south east of Ireland. I cannot impress upon the Commissioner enough the significance and importance of the agribusiness and agrifood sector to Ireland. It is not just about the trade; it is also about the impact it has on local shops, local...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: The tillage sector contributes €1.3 billion annually to the Irish economy, and we know that the area under tillage has fallen. The Irish Farmers' Journal stated in an article a couple of months ago that 1,400 tillage farmers have exited tillage. Can the witnesses talk a little about what they are hearing on the ground, what their experience is and why this is happening?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: So viability is the primary reason the witnesses are hearing on the ground. I was really interested in the comments on a marketing and promotional aspect around tillage and grain. If you go into a shop and buy a rasher or sausage, it is guaranteed 100% Irish and you know you are buying an Irish product. What are the plans to the get the Irish stamp on our grain?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: What is the import percentage for the grain we use? We export beef and have enough to use ourselves, but we import a lot of grain.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: On the costs, bearing in mind the standards we have here in Ireland, what would be the difference between producing grain in Ireland compared with, say, our cheapest competitor abroad?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: We are fully supportive of the tillage survival package. We understand and recognise the importance and significance that tillage has to Ireland from food-security and economic perspectives. While I am aware that budget negotiations are ongoing, you can be assured from our side of the House that we will do everything we can to get as good a deal as possible for the tillage sector in the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: I know there is a lot of grain in Kilkenny.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: What I have just heard is unbelievable regarding the viability of tillage. Would anyone invest in a business or sector that is not viable? That is a yes-no answer because I am conscious of the time. If a business was not viable, would Ms Byrne invest in it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: But if a sector or business was not viable, would Ms Byrne invest in it? I would not. Would Ms Byrne?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: I am really conscious of the time. Could she say "Yes" or "No"?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)

Peter Cleere: Okay, we will move on. We heard from the previous speakers that about 1,500 farmers have exited tillage farming since 2022. By the time we sit here next week, there will be another farmer not doing tillage any more. That is not just a hit on the agriculture side; it hits every community right across rural Ireland, especially where I represent, Carlow-Kilkenny. What is the Department going...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Challenges Facing the Tillage Industry: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
