- Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Dec 2018)
Lynn Ruane: Obviously, the chain of causation is a concern but in saying that the second doctor is not needed in the same way as happens under 12 weeks because of the three-day waiting period and schedules, this option after 12 weeks assumes that the hospital will be in a position to initiate the termination straight away, which might not be the case. Someone in a maternity hospital could be sent home...
- Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Dec 2018)
Lynn Ruane: Sometimes when I try to explain things, it is easier to relate them to my own experience. When I was hospitalised for a month due to the threat of something happening because of blood pressure, it did not matter how many obstetricians saw me. If an emergency induction or caesarean section was needed to save the life of my daughter, the need for the same obstetrician to sign off on it did...
- Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Dec 2018)
Lynn Ruane: -----Even in respect of health. There is an extra barrier when it involves the woman's life and it is a barrier. As a woman who was in a maternity hospital experiencing childbirth, I can tell the Minister that when it comes to the continuum of care when it is that close to affecting one's health, I do not think one would really mind if a different obstetrician or clinician comes in three...
- Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Dec 2018)
Lynn Ruane: It would be the same if an early pregnancy was being brought on arising out of a serious risk to the baby. It is usually not a risk to his or her life. It is usually a serious risk so the pregnancy is brought on earlier but they do not make sure the same clinician under whose care the woman has been in the maternity hospital is there.

Lynn Ruane: We would not know. It would not make any difference.
- Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (11 Dec 2018)
Lynn Ruane: We have tabled five amendments in this group which all relate to access to terminations in early pregnancy. My main concern is the three-day waiting period and the way in which pregnancies will be dated. Amendment No. 29 would allow the three-day wait to start from the moment a woman requests the appointment with the medical practitioner. Amendment No. 31 would allow for the three-day...

- Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (11 Dec 2018)
Lynn Ruane: On a point of order, we are now speaking to an amendment that arose in the Dáil. This is a change that took place in the Dáil. We are not speaking to my amendments or Senator Norris's amendment. It is not fair to backtrack and retrospectively have a debate about something that happened in the Dáil. It is not happening here.
