- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: I have the figures. In 2011, Mr. Boucher took home €831,000. This year, he takes home €843,000.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: How would Mr. Boucher see it if the Irish State voted against his salary given that the only reason he is sitting in front of us as CEO is because the people rescued his bank during a crisis at which time he was at a very senior level?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: Would Mr. Boucher have a problem with the State voting against his remuneration package in two weeks?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: Mr. Boucher said that no non-executive director had received an increase in salary last year. Yet there was no reduction, and the gross figure increased. The annual report, which runs up to December 2013, shows that Mr. Butler received €80,000 in fees this year, and the figures for last year, on page 159, show him receiving €79,000. Is it correct that he has received an increase?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: The other references are for different dates. Some people joined on 20 January, but Mr. Butler shows a 12-month period and an overall increase.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: A document relating to Bank of Ireland has gone missing in the Department of Finance. It was from a tax advisor who deals with high net worth individuals. It made a proposal to the governor of the bank, before it was recapitalised by the State, to buy it out and take it over. This was rejected by Bank of Ireland and the Department but the correspondence has gone missing in the Department...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: Has the documentation that is missing in the Department of Finance also gone missing in Bank of Ireland?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Bank of Ireland (10 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: The letter was cc'd to Brian Lenihan. It is highly suspicious. That was the only item of correspondence between the bank and the Department of Finance during this period. There are major questions about the tax adviser, who I do not claim did anything wrong. He was a tax adviser to the former Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, in respect of the whiparound in Manchester. This is a sensitive letter...
- Land and Conveyancing Law Reform (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (11 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." Last July the President signed into law one of the most shameful measures taken by the Government. The Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act 2013 was a brutal and cynical move with one purpose - to facilitate the repossession of family homes by lenders. The Dunne judgment was not a sustainable solution; it was a loophole found by those on...
- Land and Conveyancing Law Reform (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (11 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Paschal Donohoe, and Deputies Timmy Dooley, Stephen S. Donnelly, Seán Crowe, Peter Mathews and Mary Lou McDonald for their contributions. When I heard that the Government intended to reject the legislation, I was disappointed, as I could have brought forward a much more robust Bill. I could have revisited the personal insolvency legislation and...
- Land and Conveyancing Law Reform (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (11 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: Members have spoken about the inconsistency of approach among lenders. There should be certain proposals that all lenders offer. Sinn Féin recognises that repossessions will take place in a normal market. When they take place, the residual debt must be dealt with. It is unacceptable and unforgiving of the Government to allow banks to take family homes from people while leaving them...
- Land and Conveyancing Law Reform (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (11 Apr 2014)
Pearse Doherty: AIB has made it clear that it will deal with the residual debt at the time of agreement. None of the other banks has. If the Minister of State was genuine in relation to his comments on the strain, stress and misery and on resolving this, he would support our genuine attempt to deal with it. Our proposal is supported by those on the front line. The Government should reconsider its...
