David Stanton: No, you are not excluding anyone, and I will not exclude anyone. Do not worry.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: We will have two more supplementary questions from Deputy Ferris.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: Could I just ask a couple of questions myself? In the first paragraph of her opening statement, Ms Ní Chonaill mentioned the image of boats heading like an armada across the Mediterranean, which is a reality that we know. Why does the witness think the armada of boats is coming across the Mediterranean at the moment?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: I may have my figures incorrect here, but I understand tens of thousands of people have drowned in the Mediterranean in the last year and the year before in attempting to get across to Europe. Could I put it to the witness that the desperation of these people must be absolutely enormous to face such terrible hazards to try and get to Europe? They must be leaving something absolutely...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: I do not want to be emotive on this, but people are so desperate that they leave in coffin ships which may have little chance of surviving the Mediterranean, and while many have perished, many thousands have been saved from death by the Italian Navy and others. Is the witness suggesting that maybe these rescue attempts should not happen, as some others have said?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: So is the witness suggesting that the assistance by European navies given to these particular people in boats should not happen and they should be allowed to die?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: I suggest that it do that because Ms Ní Chonaill started off talking about an armada of boats. This armada of boats, if I can put it to the witness, with respect, is because of the horrific situation in Syria and across north Africa and further south. People are driven because of race, religion or otherwise to try and survive with their lives in many instances. Their choice would...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: It was not that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: I do not agree with the word "invasion". It is not an invasion as such.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Undocumented Migrants: Immigration Control Platform (1 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: That is that. On behalf of the committee, I thank the witnesses for their attendance and their engagement with us on this subject.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Garda Recruitment (2 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: On a point of order, with respect-----

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Garda Recruitment (2 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: We have gone ten minutes over the 30 minutes allocated for Priority Questions and it is eating into Oral Questions for ordinary Members. I just want to bring it to the attention of the Ceann Comhairle.

Order of Business (2 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: I wish to make a statement to the whole House and the Office of the Ceann Comhairle in particular. Most days, priority questions drift beyond the allocated 30 minutes, which means many of us cannot get questions in. Can we discuss staying within Standing Orders to ensure priority question time does not drift to an hour? Although Standing Orders allocate 30 minutes for priority questions,...

Order of Business (2 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: It is unfair on those of us who go to the trouble of asking questions.

Topical Issue Debate: Autism Support Services (2 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: I thank the Ceann Comhairle’s office for allowing me to raise this issue on World Autism Day. It is apt that we do so. Autism is a lifelong developmental condition with an autism spectrum going from mild to acute and severe.

Topical Issue Debate: Autism Support Services (2 Apr 2015)

David Stanton: We are not really sure as to the prevalence of autism. Research by the National Council for Special Education, NCSE, indicates it is one in 100, totalling 450,000 people in Ireland. Research from the United States indicates it is one in 68 people, a more alarming statistic. This is an issue on which we need to focus. Apart from the day that is in it, another reason I am raising this...
