Peter Fitzpatrick: A Cheann Comhairle, I just wanted to thank you.
- Questions on Promised Legislation (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: Could I have an update on the health (amendment) Bill, which is to provide a medical card to all children in receipt of domiciliary care? It is vital that the legislation be put in place as a matter of urgency. What is occurring is unacceptable. I am visiting this Friday evening a family in Dundalk with a child with a severe disability. They are in receipt of the domiciliary care...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sport in Ireland - Challenges, Strategies and Governance: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I welcome the Ministers. I understand that should any of the national governing bodies funded by Sport Ireland make a loss or be in a net liability situation they are requested to detail what action their boards are taking to ensure that there will be no loss the following year. Can the Minister confirm to the committee if this situation has occurred at any time in the past, and if so is he...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sport in Ireland - Challenges, Strategies and Governance: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: Can the Minister ask his officials to clarify that and get back to me as soon as possible? In regard to the funding of the Olympic Council of Ireland, OCI, I understand that the policy was that all expenditure was to be vouched, and should actual expenditure be lower than the budget amount then the final balance payment will be reduced accordingly. Can the Minister confirm if this situation...

Peter Fitzpatrick: I am sharing time with my other two colleagues. I understand that the Minister of State, Deputy O'Donovan, has requested a meeting with Dr. Wu, who is president of the International Boxing Association, AIBA, to discuss issues arising from the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Can the Minister of State confirm if a date has been set and outline what issue he intends to raise with Dr. Wu? Can the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: The Minister has stated Expressway services are the root cause of the current difficulty in Bus Éireann. They account for 10% of the company's passengers. Is it the Minister's opinion that if Bus Éireann did not operate the Expressway services, it would not be in such dire financial circumstances?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: Should it not operate the Expressway service, would it be in a different position? Does the Minister agree that the Expressway service is valid and doing a good job, or should it be done away with?

Peter Fitzpatrick: The Minister has stated the service accounts for 10% of passenger journeys. I want to know what his opinion is. In fairness, he is the Minister responsible for transport, tourism and sport and has a responsibility to do something.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: The Minister has stated publicly that he will not interfere in any dispute between Bus Éireann and the unions. As the Minister with responsibility, he has a duty to become involved and do everything in his power to ensure both parties can reach a compromise in order that services will not be disrupted.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: What is happening? The Minister has to take responsibility at some stage.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I asked that question because it is related to my next one. The Minister has stated that, as far as he is concerned, neither party has set preconditions to beginning discussions. I have to disagree with him in that it is quite clear that the acting CEO of Bus Éireann has set out preconditions in his recent letter to workers in which he outlines the actions he intends to take in the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: To be fair, I believe they are preconditions. Did the Minister see the letter? Does he not believe they are preconditions?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: That is why I am asking the Minister who is responsible for transport and tourism to get involved. He is saying both sides have no preconditions, but I am saying one side has.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Current Financial Situation at Bus Éireann, the Expressway Service and the Rural Transport Programme (Resumed) (1 Feb 2017)
Peter Fitzpatrick: I am very concerned by the comments the Minister made in his opening statement. He stated: "Government will review how best to ensure a sustainable funding model for the free travel scheme." I spoke directly with the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Varadkar, last week and received absolute clarification from him that there would be no changes to the free travel scheme. Can the...
