Topical Issue Debate: Greyhound Industry (21 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: The decision last week to sell Harold's Cross racecourse was the last straw for many. The board of Harold's Cross were not consulted. Those who have contributed to the industry for generations are sick and tired of the way the Irish Greyhound Board is running this industry. Frankly speaking, it is running it into the toilet. It is a basket case at this stage. The level of debt is...

Alan Kelly: Running away, maybe.

Topical Issue Debate: Greyhound Industry (21 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: I appreciate that.

Topical Issue Debate: Greyhound Industry (21 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. He is one of the most honourable people in here, but the reply supplied by his Department is the same garbage that departmental officials supplied to me, Deputy Burke and others at last week's Committee of Public Accounts meeting. It does not get to the nub of the issue. It is washing its hands of it. It is letting down the owners, breeders,...

Industrial Relations (Right to Access) (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage [Private Members] (22 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: In June, a Labour Party motion on workers' rights was passed by the House but the Government has done nothing to implement what was passed.

Industrial Relations (Right to Access) (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage [Private Members] (22 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: The motion was passed by everyone in the House except those in government. The foundation of my party is inextricably linked with the trade union movement. We have argued throughout our history that the best means of strengthening the hand of workers and their unions is through co-operation of both organised and political labour. This means that we have been unwavering in our support for...

Industrial Relations (Right to Access) (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage [Private Members] (22 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: I will do so in a moment. As the president of SIPTU, Jack O'Connor, stated that this is the only country in the entire OECD in which legislative protections were put in place for workers during the financial meltdown. Those protections improved workers' rights during those crisis years. Ireland is the only country in the OECD in which that happened.

Alan Kelly: Deputy Crowe is right. It is Jack O'Connor of the Labour Party. As a former SIPTU shop steward-----

Industrial Relations (Right to Access) (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage [Private Members] (22 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: Can I have this time back?

Industrial Relations (Right to Access) (Amendment) Bill 2016: Second Stage [Private Members] (22 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: As a former SIPTU shop steward for many years, I know of the campaigns of intimidation and anti-union tactics that can go on in workplaces. I stand here as one of the few people who knows what it is to take workers out on strike. A young organiser told me recently that he invited some fellow workers to join his union but they asked him why they would do that because they want to be promoted...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Quarterly Update on Health Issues: Discussion (22 Feb 2017)

Alan Kelly: I welcome the delegation, which is slightly smaller this time. We have more Ministers on this occasion. I hope this delegation will be the same one that will be in front of us in a few months time. I am sure all the Ministers would agree with that. Given the times we live in, I wish them the best of luck. The situation in accident and emergency departments has improved recently but one...
