Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Citizens Information Board: Chairperson Designate (10 Jun 2015)

James Bannon: I welcome Ms Mangan to the meeting and I compliment her on her new role as chairman of the CIB. What are her views on the overall restructuring of the agency, regionalisation and so on? Does she intend to work with small rural post offices, which are under threat at the moment, and encourage people to use their post office, etc.? That would be important because they are important in rural...

Communications Regulation (Postal Services) (Amendment) Bill 2015: Second Stage (11 Jun 2015)

James Bannon: I welcome the Minister. Before speaking on this legislation, I wish to counter some of the claims made by my constituency colleague, Deputy Troy. In the interest of clarity, it must be noted that between 2005 and 2010 Fianna Fáil closed 288 post offices. Since then, only two post offices have closed nationwide.

Communications Regulation (Postal Services) (Amendment) Bill 2015: Second Stage (11 Jun 2015)

Communications Regulation (Postal Services) (Amendment) Bill 2015: Second Stage (11 Jun 2015)

James Bannon: It closed 288 post offices. Since we took over, only 22 post offices have closed nationwide. The Longford-Westmeath constituency backs up this statistic. Since 2011 there has been no post office closure in either county, whereas over the three-year period from 2005 to 2008, Fianna Fáil managed to close six offices in Westmeath and three in Longford. Deputy Troy also asked the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electoral Commission in Ireland: Discussion (16 Jun 2015)

James Bannon: I welcome the representatives. This is an issue that has been discussed for quite a long time. It was to the fore when the e-voting machines were introduced. That was a dreadful fiasco which cost the country in the region of €60 million plus of taxpayers' money.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electoral Commission in Ireland: Discussion (16 Jun 2015)

James Bannon: If I understood Dr. Muiris MacCárthaigh correctly, he did not feel there was a great need to set up a commission. We need to fix a system that is not working. As a practising politician, I recognise that there are major problems with the electoral register throughout the country. After each election we are informed of the numerous errors that occurred in every single register....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electoral Commission in Ireland: Discussion (16 Jun 2015)

James Bannon: I will move on to the questions now. Does any European country have a similar system to ours, or are we unique in having a register that must be compiled on an annual basis? Most other European countries have a rolling register. Perhaps the witnesses could give an indication as to what happens in the rest of Europe and on where we should model our practice.

Central Bank (Variable Rate Mortgages) Bill 2015: Second Stage [Private Members] (7 Jul 2015)

James Bannon: Deputy Dowds will be glad to know that I got considerable funding under the Government through the ghost estates initiative to have Drumlish and many other estates throughout Longford and Westmeath finished to a very high standard. We were successful in getting more funding for estates in Longford-Westmeath than any other county or region in the country. The people of Drumlish and the other...

Order of Business (8 Jul 2015)

James Bannon: Significant progress has been made by the Government in merging bodies and abolishing quangos since it came into office, but it does not get a great deal of publicity. We have created considerable savings for the taxpaying general public. When can we expect the Tailte Éireann Bill to merge the Property Registration Authority, the Valuation Office and Ordnance Survey Ireland into one...
