Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: We have never really addressed the sustainable development goals at the committee and they are supposed to be addressed by every committee. It is important. The point I am trying to make is on where this sits with local authorities. I would love the advice and guidance of the witnesses on this. If we do not take it seriously at local authority level I do not know what we will do.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I was not asking about fibre broadband. It came up as an issue that the digihub in Inis Oírr has been a solution to that issue, so perhaps that is something that can be looked at in resect of the islands. The other thing about the ferries is that I was just saying they could donate. I was not questioning-----

Seanad: Local Government Matters: Statements (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Cuirim fáilte ar ais roimh an Aire Stáit. I will focus on housing. My county of Clare is a mainly rural county. We have Ennis, Shannon and Kilrush, and that is about it when it comes to towns. There is great stuff being done on housing. It is really good in urban areas but my concern is that a lot of the activity through the Land Development Agency is not relevant in my county....

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Housing Provision (13 Jul 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy O'Donnell, for coming to the House. I would love to see the Minister, Deputy Darragh O'Brien, coming here some time to take questions on housing. I am afraid the Minister of State is the fall guy. I am sure the Minister is busy. A total of 15% of our population are over 65 years of age. I regularly receive telephone calls from older people living in...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Housing Provision (13 Jul 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Our older people have served the country the longest. They seem to be falling between the cracks when it comes to being dealt with properly. I have looked up the data the Minister of State referred to and that is how I know that one in seven of the population is over 65 and one in four will be over 65 in 2050. From talking to people on the ground and from phone calls I receive, I know...

Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Motions (13 Jul 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I acknowledge the work of Senator Kyne on the original 2016 legislation. I also acknowledge the work of Senator Fitzpatrick. Deputy Noonan will go down in history as the first Minister of State to get this legislation across the line. We must have hope and there is no hope without action. We know that from the campaigners, climate warriors and environmental NGOs. The Minister of State...

Caithfidh mé dul ann tráthnóna inniu so ní raibh mé in ann a bheith in dá áit ag an am céanna ach ba bhreá liom bheith ar Árainn Mhór i...

Seanad: Road Safety: Statements (27 Sep 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit chuig an Teach. I was delighted to hear some of the announcements he made recently around speed reduction and I thank him for that. I worked full-time for 12 years on behavioural change around car use before I became a Senator. I have worked with town, city, and village schools, and those up the mountain and where nobody else is around. The...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: SME Energy and Carbon Demands, Green Initiatives and Technology: Discussion (27 Sep 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I will try to keep to the time, which I am very bad at doing. I wanted to speak to the representatives before the committee on this topic for three years so I am very excited they are here. I just tore back from a PwC Business in the Community event. What was said there is not exactly the same as what the witnesses said. I got a greater sense of urgency at that event than I am getting...
